Katherine Morgan: She will be the first to admit that she became a singer by accident. "I was singing in a choir and the director heard my voice and encouraged me to develop my style". Katie immediately started classical voice training at age fifteen. When other girls were busy putting up posters of their favorite pop icons, she studied Italian opera and ended up competing at NATS and took fifth in the state. Her voice and enthusiasm landed her some prestigious roles in musical theatre and she eventually ended up in New York City. "I used to go down to Greenwich Village and listen to the musicians play," says Katie. She was so inspired that she began jotting down lyrics and melodies on the back of her acting sides. She would show up the next day and start singing what she wrote. Discovered by a producer, she was quickly picked up to join a group called "Off White"; somewhat like TLC it was comprised of 3 women singing delicious pop melodies.
↓ more ↓But that sweetness soon wore off. Originally from Kansas, Katie was a corn fed Midwestern rock belter who headed to California in search of musicians who shared her vibrant rebellious energy.
She enjoyed mild success with her first album titled Pink Cloud, which is a musical version of a woman's super ego. Her first cut, "Open My Eyes" has garnered a lot of attention. The entire album is filled with songs about sex, relationships, loss and newfound beginnings. Her vocal range is indefinite, with comparisons to Faith Hill, Sheryl Crow and Janis Joplin. Just when you think you've got her pegged as a lovesick naïf, she'll easily turn into a tough as nails rocker.
While promoting her album, she was introduced to Leslie Stoddard: A Berklee College of Music student who was also a recipient of a Best Female Guitarist award from The LA Music Awards in 2000. Leslie was already writing music and performing in an established local band. "I heard Katie's CD and immediately gave her a call to see if we could collaborate". They nurtured a relationship via telephone for months. When they finally met face to face, Leslie had put together a band of accomplished musicians. Adding to the mix she brought Kelley Duarte, (a.k.a. "Getaway Sticks Gia" ~ GSG) "schooled" Faunt School of Creative Music Bassist. She has had several great mentors and teachers, always wanting to learn more, throughout her numerous years of playing and learning. A few of her favorites include Randy Jackson, Victor Wooten, John Paul Jones and Baba Elfante. She was nominated several times and received an award from Rock City News as Best Female Bass player in Southern California. This is a small town girl from Visalia, California who has been playing professionally for over 15 years. She has toured with several bands throughout the United States. Together, they rehearsed and immediately found a common synergy and comfort in their musicianship. Adding flavors of folk, blues, rock and pop elements, Katie is now able to explore her dark, introspective side, allowing her image to be somewhat wilder and a little less controlled.
Collectively, these women have shared the stage with The Doobie Brothers, Lenny Kravitz, Missing Persons, The Offspring, Starship, A Flock of Seagulls, Thelma Houston, Cece Peniston and Dave Wakeling of the English Beat. They have worked with producers such as Jim Wirt (Incubus, Hoobastank) Adam Green (Poe, Red-Hot Chili Peppers) Sean Renet (Pearl Jam) and recorded five independently released albums between them. They also have six songs licensed in the independent film industry, currently playing film festivals worldwide. Their experience and talent is enough to make any boy band blush.
When it all ends and women rule the planet, these are the girls that are capable of ruling. They are fearless, take chances and exude an artistic sensuality. A rockin' band and a singer who's studied your kind, written about you and loved you, but most of all she has a voice that will make you forget you ever owned a Y chromosome. They are a special breed, Sexy women who radiate talent with guitars and drums. Sound dangerous? ABSOLUTELY!!
