The NEWEST recording by The Jump, Jivin' Wailers featuring HOT classic big band jazz for listening and dancing, recorded in 2007 by New York City's premiere swing dance big band.
Editorial review
New York City bandleader George Gee (he is not listed as playing an instrument) and the Jump Jivin' Wailers little big band are into the swing thing, and re-create a dozen-plus-one classics and slightly obscure tunes from the golden era of jazz. Arranger and trumpeter Walt Szymanski contributes nine of the 13 charts done with a flair that emphasizes group interplay and slightly bolder accents than the originals. Clarinetist Daniel Block takes the lion's share of soloing, with tenor saxophonist Michael Hashim and Szymanski helping in that department secondarily. The experience Szymanski gained living and working in Detroit as the music director for drummer J.C. Heard's big band has obviously held him here in good stead. Another ex-Detroiter, baritone saxophonist Alex Harding is also a mighty presence. The music comes in-part from the book of Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, and American Popular songsmiths with a chestnut or knuckleball tossed in here and there. Block shines brightly on the Henderson flagwaver "Down South Camp Meeting," Eddie Sauter's fervent and fun "All the Cats Join In," and Benny Goodman's "If Dreams Come True." The whole band swings hardest collectively during the rapid-fire solos in Lionel Hampton's "Gin for Xmas" and James P. Johnson's strutting "Victory Stride." These are perfect vehicles for contemporary retro-swing endeavors. John Dokes sings as a pseudo-Jimmy Rushing on "Sent for You Yesterday," ex-Detroiter Carla Cook does the unrequited blues "It Had to Be You," and Szymanski vocally camps it up a bit for "Lulu's Back in Town." Though overall there are good if not clich?d choices of material, this for the most part is a listenable and enjoyable date, best appreciated by seasoned listeners. ~ Michael G. Bio / Background
Now in 2007, George Gee and his more compact 10 piece swing big band "The Jump, Jivin' Wailers" has released GJazz Records GJ3568, "If Dreams Come True." After nearly three decades as an established swing bandleader in the big band industry, George Gee realizes that this is a "Dream Come True!" Little did he know that when he started his first big band on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1980, that it would lead to a continuing lifetime fulfillment of his passion for the big band art form and it's style of music. Fueled by the recent resurgence of interest in Big Band Swing and Lindy Hop and the mass addition of new swing jazz music lovers, George Gee has taken advantage of the climate by presenting a fun and high energy showcase of the Big Band style and ideology. ↓ more ↓Jump, Jivin' Wailers (formerly The Jump, Jive & Wailers)was created in 1999 by Musical Director/Trumpeter/Vocalist Walt Szymanski and bandleader George Gee as a way to economically perform and tour with a smaller orchestra with a "Big Band" sound. Walt wrote custom-tailored musical arrangements that still took advantage of the original orchestrations and retained the full, classic and swingin' sound. "If Dreams Come True" features dancefloor-proven, classic Savoy Ballroom favorites and the arrangements of Mr. Szymanski (with a few additional contributions by Dan Barrett, Jordan Sandke and Michael Hashim). Classic big band swing jazz, meant for both listenin' and dancin', with a nod towards the jump styles of some of George's favorites: his musical idol and mentor Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, Fats Waller and Jimmy Rushing. Special appearances by Grammy nominee vocalist Carla Cook, vocalist John Dokes and clarinetist Dan Block.
