It was a time of happiness, sadness, musical explosion, pain, and love. It was a time of peace and war. It was our Walrus Days. Go back and live those crazy days of youth with hat tips to the Beatles, Wah Wah guitars, Vietnam War, Cruisin, drive-in movies
Bio / Background
Look out song-poems fans as a new word slinger is in town. The 100 year old song-poem adventure is ready to have a shoot out. Gary Murtha has been writing poems/songs for over 40 years and has opened up his bottle of brew for all to enjoy. "Walrus Days" teams up veteran writer/arranger Gary Murtha with two very special artists. David Fox aka Art Kaufman is a legend in the song-poem adventure while David Dubowski is a new rising star. Gary's first album "Walrus Days" is a flashback to his days of youth. Unique concept album with custom label.
Song-poems have been around for just over 100 years. They are poems that were given to a musician (for hire) to create a song. Nowadays, with the rise of computers and software programs, one can create, produce, distribute, and market their own songs. During it's history, the song-poem business has been overlooked by the mega giant music industry.
↓ more ↓The music industry wanted to pick and choose, lyrics, artists, and songs to give contracts to and promote. Kind of sounds like today doesn't it?
Song-poems are in effect like a "demo" in that they were a paid for look at what a song might be. Song-poem creations are not so different from todays songs created by renting out a recording studio and musicians. Song-poems are not any different than any other song in that they all are an expression of someone's soul. An expression waiting for an unsuspecting ear to pick up, dance with, and listen to. So sit back and listen to a new sound about the past.
"Strawberrywalrus" is a hat tip to that little band called the Beatles. "Rear View Mirror" reminds us of those great days of cruising and drive-in movies. "When The Walrus Met The Blossom" takes us back to those wonderful Wah Wah guitar days. "Mist of Morn" and "Sunshine Soldier" take a look at the Vietnam War. Four instrumental compositions form bridges to different songs and add texture to the soundscape. The album finishes with a powerful song called "The End."
It was a time of happiness, sadness, musical explosion, pain, and love. It was a time of peace and war. It was our Walrus Days.
