THE BAND
Jackie Moran (Bodhran, Percussion)
Born in Thurles Co. Tipperary, Jackie immigrated to Chicago with his family at age 10. Jackie turned professional at age 17 when he co-founded the popular group, The Drovers. Besides co-founding Gan Bua with Christy, Jackie has been a founding member of Wilding, The Otters, Comas and the Trinity Irish Dance Company. A much sought after percussionist he has toured with Riverdance and performed and recorded with Kevin Burke, Liz Carroll, Dave Munnelly, Martin Hayes and Paddy Keenan among others. Jackie’s signature rhythms have been featured in the films; Backdraft (1991), Blink (1993), Traveler (1997) and The Road to Perdition (2002). Besides performing with Gan Bua, he also tours with Belgian based band Comas, and when not performing, Jackie with his wife Amy, run the Irish dance school Anam Mór, founded in 2001.
Christy Bain (Fiddle)
Chicago native, Christy Bain, comes from a musical family.
↓ more ↓He started violin at age 5 and since then has been trained in Classical, Bluegrass, Welsh and Irish Traditional fiddling. He has enjoyed a career that has taken him to Europe and throughout North America. Over the years, Christy has lived and studied in both Wales and Ireland. Appearances on Welsh language and Irish television (S4C, TG4, RTE) and radio (BBC, RnG, NPR) have made his face and sound recognizable to many trad loyalists. His music is a great culmination of influences including playing the Bouzouki and fiddlers Paddy Glackin, Cathal Hayden, Liz Carroll and Frankie Gavin. In addition to performing with Gan Bua, Christy performs with premier Welsh traditional band Crasdant. When not playing music, he regulates and maintains pedal harps in the US and Europe.
Sean Gavin (Uilleann Pipes,Flute, Tin Whistle)
Sean has an ornate and driving style that reflects his immersion in Irish traditional music. Born in Detroit to Clare fiddler Mick Gavin, Sean began his Flute and Whistle career at the age of 10 with Scariff Flute player, Leo MacNamara. He quickly started competing in Fleadh Ceol competitions and has not missed competing in the All-Ireland Fleadh since. He also studied pipes with the late Al Purcell, a student of Leo Rowsome. Sean’s music has earned him much respect among Pipers and Flute players both in the US and Ireland. In addition to competing in Ireland, he has been featured on the radio in the US and Ireland (NPR, RnG, RTE) and performed at numerous festivals. He has also performed with Seamus Connelly, Brian Conway, Liz Carroll, Barbara MacDonald-Magone and Cathy Ryan.
Brian Hart (Vocals, Concertina,Tin Whistle)
Brían Ó hAirt’s ( Brian Hart) anomalous voice stands as a testament to the power of tradition. His ability to share the mind’s eye of an older generation of singers has afforded him great acclaim at a young age. A native of St. Louis, he became the first American to ever win the coveted Sgiath Uí Dhálaigh shield at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 2002 – adding his name to the shield’s long list of noted singers including Joe Heaney, Frank Harte and Paddy Berry. His dedication to traditional song and more specifically to the Sean-Nós style of singing encouraged him to learn the Irish language to fluency and introduced him to the close-knit singing community of the Conamara Gaeltacht where Irish is still the commonly spoken language. Brian has performed extensively in the US and Ireland. He has also had the distinction of being a singer to the President of Ireland, Dr. Mary McAleese. Brian’s recordings have featured on many radio programs in Ireland including Céilí House on RTÉ and Lán a’ Mhála on RnG as well as on various NPR programs’ in the States. He is also a noted instrumentalist of Accordion, Concertina and Tin Whistle.
Brian Miller (Guitar)
Rambles magazine praises Brian Miller as a guitarist “who really understands the music [and doesn’t] just play the chords”. Also an accomplished flute player, Miller started his career playing Irish music during his teenage years in his native Bemidji, Minnesota. He has lived in St. Paul since 1998 and often travels to his adopted home of Cork. Brian began playing Flute in 2000 while studying Irish music in Cork with teachers Padrig Kelleher and Conal O’Grada. When not performing with Gan Bua, Brian performs in 5 Mile Chase (with fiddler Django Amerson) and The Doon Ceili Band (with County Offaly accordion player Paddy O’Brien). His music has brought him to many venues in the US and Canada. In addition to the above Brian occasionally performs with singer Aoife Clancy and flute player Lawrence Nugent.
