A blend of African rhythms of soukous, zouk and benga with RnB and a touch of hip hop.
Bio / Background
Fulani, otherwise known as Emmanuel Mutsune started taking piano lessons along with his siblings at a young age while growing up in Nairobi, Kenya. While in grade school some of his friends would drum on desks at lunch time as he rapped - something which did not please his teachers. He later teamed up with a friend to form a rap group, but the union ended once the two ended up going to different high schools. In future years, he would perform with several rap groups in Nairobi.
While he continued to perform at local concerts, it was not until 1999 that he recorded his first single ‘Saira’, which earned him the opportunity to perform before a crowd of close to 10,000 people at the 2000 New Year’s eve celebration in Nairobi, an event which was also televised locally. Saira highlighted the evolution of his musical style.
↓ more ↓In this song and others which he would later record, he combines African Soukous rhythms with elements of hip hop to create a style of music which compliments his name (in Swahili, Fulani is a paradox; it could mean specific, yet it could also mean undefined).
In collaboration with several multi-talented musicians and producers, Fulani has recently completed the recording of his debut album Muziki FULANI/ FULANI Music. Some of the musicians he has worked with on this project include Kenyan-born Juno award winner Adam Solomon. The producers he has worked with on this recording include Robert ‘R.Kay’ Kamanzi and Steve Ominde, two accomplished Kenyan producers with the latter having produced a hit song which earned the 2003 Kora Award, one of Africa’s most coveted awards.
