This is beautiful music, easy-going acoustic-based music in the vein of Joni Mitchell, The Innocence Mission, and The Sundays. "The male / female vocal interplay is engaging and when the harmony parts click as they do in the opening of I'm a Sucker (Fo
Bio / Background
Friction Bailey's founding members, Steve and Joy Guiles, live in San Dimas, California (30 miles east of Los Angeles).
Here's what other people have said about their debut release:
"The male/female vocal interplay is engaging... they verge on the transcendent."
"Steve Guiles' skills as a player, writer and arranger have never been more evident and the presence of friends Ben Eggehorn and Eric Shouse, both of Pushstart Wagon, and The Vegas Nerve's George Matamala give a depth to the playing and production rare to find on an independent release. A simple and unpretentious record, Tengo Yellow Pedal is the type of album that grows more engaging with repeated listens. A solid debut."
-Todd Brown, True Tunes magazine (www.truetunes.com)
"Tengo Yellow Pedal" IS Friction Bailey'S first full-length album, nout counting their tape only "Songs and Second Thoughts".
Friction Bailey was formed in the mind of Steve and Joy in the mid 90s.
↓ more ↓In the summer of 1998 they released a demo that they had been recording in the living room and bathroom of their small apartment since 1995. In the summer of 2000 they decided to produce and arrange a full-length album (Tengo Yellow Pedal) with the production help of Eric Shouse (Pushstart Wagon) and the recording talents of Ben Eggehorn (Pushstart Wagon).
Steve Guiles, 30, played all electric and acoustic guitars (and several bass tracks) for the recording and wrote or co-wrote all the songs with his wife Joy. He is influenced by such diverse acts as Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Westerberg of infamous 80s punk act The Replacements, and Stephen Malkmus of Pavement; Joy Guiles, 27, cites influences like The Sundays, Ricki Lee Jones, Sam Phillips, Ben Harper, and Neil Young. For the recording, Steve and Joy enlisted the help of Ben Eggehorn on drums and George Matamala (The Vegas Nerve) onbass and keyboards for several tracks.
Friction Bailey frequently performs as an acoustic duo, but also puts together a ragamuffin band enlisting several drummers, percussionists, guitarists, and bassists.
