with silly/sexy female vocals, clever lyircs about love & robots & loving robots, super blippy dance beats, and an indie approach to pop songwriting, freezepop offers up it's debut 2000 album, clearly identifying them as one of the best new synthpop bands
Editorial review
Freezepop's debut record is '80s kitsch through and through -- and what would you expect from a band who plays all of their music on a Yamaha QY70 synthesizer? While some may accuse this album -- and more specifically, the lack of guitar, bass, and drums -- of being a little flat, Forever is really half art project, half fun. These kids are in their early to mid-twenties, so they were part of the first generation to grow up with the original synth poppers (Human League, Erasure) as part of their lexicon. At the same time, they realize that those same acts were made fun of for the better part of the '90s and that college rock, as it was known in 2001, was not heavy on synthesizers except for those pumping out 240 beats per minute. So Forever, then, mixes a distinctly goofy indie pop sensibility (a lot like Bis) with those synthesizers. It means that Freezepop turns out songs about cloning your crush or having a crush on Tracey Gold, and those types of geeky '80s references are exactly what will appeal to the college crowd who hears this album. Supposedly the Other Sean T. Drinkwater -- who is more or less the mastermind behind at least the sound of both Freezepop and Lifestyle -- likes to play down his '80s connections for fear of looking like a novelty. Lord only knows why: Forever is evidence that if you've got it, flaunt it, baby. ~ Jason Damas, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Hip enough for hipsters but nerdy enough for nerds, Freezepop are back with a new batch of songs that you won't be able to get out of your head. Their second full-length album, Fancy Ultra*Fresh, builds upon the minimal electropop of their past releases, with an edgier, fuller sound. With songs ranging from the aggressively dancey "Parlez-Vous Freezepop?" to the hushed "Outer Space," to the cheeky and blippy "Stakeout," Freezepop have introduced new sonic elements to their repertoire, while remaining true to their catchy synthpop roots. Fancy Ultra*Fresh was released by the Archenemy Record Company in May 2004.
Formed in 1999, Freezepop is the union of Liz Enthusiasm (vocalist/fashion plate), the Duke of Pannekoeken (programmer extraordinaire), and the Other Sean T. Drinkwater (synths/vocoder/wacky hijinks). All the Freezepop songs are programmed on a Yamaha QY-70, a handheld battery-powered sequencer.
↓ more ↓Their debut album, Freezepop Forever, was released domestically by Archenemy in 2001, and was licensed for worldwide release by Elefant, a Spanish indiepop label. The band have also released several EPs of new material as well as remixes by the Future Bible Heroes, Soviet, Stephan Groth (Apop/Fairlight Children), and more. Freezepop have songs featured in four Sony PlayStation2 video games, including Karaoke Revolution, Frequency, and Amplitude. They have performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, and have played at the Outsider Electronic Festival, as well as with such artists as Cibo Matto, Add N to (X), and Momus.

This album is king of quirky synthpopTravisO wrote on April 09, 2008
This album is a sparkling example of how synthpop can be fun and good too. Freezepop doesn't take itself too serious, but at the same time many of these tracks are catchy. I've owned this album since it's release in 2000 and I still enjoy listening to it. There are lot of creative ideas on this album and looking back at all their albums, I feel this one is still the best. If you can enjoy something light fun and still good, you'll love this.
