In her solo debut, this artist forges a sonic, soul-searching path from the past to the future, skillfully blending influences of tribal, rock, blues, ethnic, folk, goth, hip-hop, and transcendental poetry into one seamless beautiful journey.
Editorial review
Azure Wonder & Lust is an enchanting multi-textured album blending funky percussive samples, ambient sounds, guitar pyrotechnics, and orchestral arrangements into folky neo-pop songs. Similar to Tori Amos, Dido, and Kate Bush in style and execution, Farrington's voice soars through astute observations of the human condition with deep spiritual convictions amid the many sound collages. The Middle Eastern/African influences on this collection are abundant, especially on the opening cut, "Magic," a track that employs a deft mixture of polyrythmic drum loops, legato melodies, and spoken-word vignettes. {"I Might Not Be Here,"} another highlight, bursts out with a dub bassline bubbling underneath a swirling string arrangement and angelic falsetto vocal calisthenics. The most infectious cut on this disc is "Let the World Go Away," which opens with a rap and gradually develops into a melodic <I>tour de force</I> in the chorus before breaking into a clever 12-string guitar solo during the third verse. Farrington and her producer/co-songwriter Anthony Resta have created a complex and intriguing album that is enjoyable upon fist listen. Considering the scope of this project, that's a laudable accomplishment for a debut album. ~ Tom Semioli, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Heralding from the critically acclaimed rock band Opium Den, Ms. Farrington, in her solo debut, forges a sonic, soul-searching path from the past to the future, skillfully blending influences of tribal, rock, blues, ethnic, folk, goth, hip-hop, and transcendental poetry into one seamless beautiful journey.
"I grew up on a farm, miles from our nearest neighbor with my five sisters and brothers. My Father was a transcendentalist, piano player and merchant, spouting Emerson and Thoreau.
"My Mother was a scholar and nurse, who would take us on nature walks and painting trips through the 200 acres of wilderness were we lived. This childhood made me see the world in a most unusual and spontaneous way........then I moved to New York City, where I studied acting and began touring with a repertoire company.
"I picked up the guitar and began composing. After two years in New York I ventured to Boston and formed Opium Den.
↓ more ↓The band started out as a freestyle experimental act, the music being a spontaneous mix of tribal Middle Eastern melodies and soaring siren vocals with post apocalyptic urgencies. We quickly became recognized as pioneers in the Goth movement."
Annette honed her unique style in the dark and cool clubs in the Boston music scene where audiences are hip and demanding. She quickly won them over while receiving rave reviews from the press and several nominations for best vocalist and best new artist at the American Music Awards and Boston Music Awards.
For this solo album she has teamed up with six-time gold record winning producer Anthony Resta, who has worked with such diverse artists as Elton John, Megadeth, Duran Duran, Collective Soul and Shawn Mullens.
