Bio / Background
It's impossible to describe the anguish one experiences when told that your beautiful two year old son has a poorly understood, incurable neurologic disease. For us D-day (diagnostic day) came on 3/24/06. We went to the evaluation to be reassured that Benji didn't have autism. We left in shock, our hearts feeling as though they had been ripped from our chests - numb, helpless and despairing.
A lot has passed in the year since Benji's diagnosis and the details could fill a few thousand cd jackets. With time we've regained our hope and our confidence that Benji will recover from this mysterious disease. His treatment regimen is diverse, time-consuming, experimental and expensive - running thousands of dollars each month. Our insurance covers $500/year for "mental health" benefits which is how autism is inappropriately characterized. Yet we're among the lucky whose child is getting the care and attention that he deserves.
