Bio / Background
I’m not sure exactly what I thought I had in mind when I set out to do this recording. I had some rough ideas for how I wanted the songs to sound but nothing too concrete. Last April, Doug Mackey came into town all the way from the great state of Texas to get himself married, and just by luck had an afternoon he could spend working on tracks with me down at Pacific Studios . Some of the songs we’d played together before and some of them he was hearing for the first time that afternoon, but there’s a lot to be said for having played together for 24 years and in five short hours we had all the drums finished. If you had told me it was going to take another 6 months to get everything else recorded and mixed down I don’t think I would have believed you, but here it is all that time later and I just now got everything all finished and done.
↓ more ↓Most everything else, with the exception of a little guitar and a few of the vocal tracks, we recorded here at the Trailer Park in The Shed, my new studio. Tony Thomas coming on board early on to lend his bass and mixing talents was really what allowed this project to get finished and I don’t think I would be exaggerating if I said that this never would have come close to sounding as good as it does without his effort. I’d worked with Tony on The Prairie Dogs CD Brand New Heart and when he said he’d be interested in helping out with this CD I couldn’t believe my good luck.
I guess I really didn’t realize in the beginning how much I would wind up relying on so many different people in the process of getting this done. It feels strange to call it a “solo album” since so little could have actually been done without a whole host of friends who lent me both their time and expertise. From Steve McElrath at threedollarchair.com whose great pictures and Photoshop ideas helped get the artwork finished and Tommy Shinn spending a sweltering evening back in August laying down a guitar solo, to my brother Ryan taking some time to get all the other pictures I needed and lending me guitars and his banjo. It was a pretty cool group of friends who’d spend all that time and effort just to help me out.
Maybe that why the name Attachments seemed so fitting when it showed up in my email in the form of an Mp3 that Tony sent me. That maybe that’s what all these songs were about—the interconnectedness that makes up one small moment of life.
