Bio / Background
TELL A STORY 2003 is a reissue of E. Shawn Qaissaunee's debut CD TELL A STORY, originally released in 2000. TELL A STORY 2003 offers two new songs as well as brand new artwork conceptualized and designed by the artist himself. The original CD received critical and popular acclaim and this reissue is sure to follow in it's footsteps.
E. Shawn Qaissaunee (Kay-Saw-Nee) was born on January 30, 1970 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Qaissaunee family moved to the United States in 1970. After living in Ohio and Virginia, they settled in Dover, Delaware in 1975. Shawn studied piano in elementary school and began playing alto saxophone in fifth grade. He began playing guitar in ninth grade, self-taught for several months and then taking guitar lessons at a local music store. Shawn was an integral part of several successful rock bands while attending high school, as well as performing with the Dover High School Jazz Band and the All State Jazz Band.
↓ more ↓In August of 1988 Shawn left Delaware to tour the New England area as guitarist and keyboardist with The Arrington Collection, a dance band.
In May of 1989 Shawn begun his formal musical education at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts as a Jazz Composition/Music Education double major. He excelled in all his classes, ensembles and labs, maintaining a 3.92 GPA throughout. After leaving college he lived just outside of Boston where he wrote original music and performed keyboards in blues bands and for a children's theater. He moved back to Delaware in the summer of 1992 where he began to teach guitar and continued to write and perform his original music.
Northern Delaware and Philadelphia proved to be more fertile ground for his talents, so in the fall of 1998 Shawn moved to Newark, Delaware. Consequently, he frequently performs in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He teaches guitar and bass guitar in his home studio, where he also operates a 24 track digital recording studio. In January 2000 Shawn recorded and released TELL A STORY, his first CD as a bandleader, which received critical and popular acclaim. His new CD, PAINTING PICTURES, was released in October 2001, and features a five-piece band playing his compositions and arrangements. Shawn's influences are varied and he has studied with reknowned musicians and guitarists John Dougherty, Garrison Fewell, Jon Damian, Pat Martino and Wolfgang Muthspiel.
In 2001 Shawn's career continued to progress, culminating in June when he opened for internationally famous jazz pianist McCoy Tyner. Shawn has performed in the USA and in Europe and is currently working on with the release of TELL A STORY 2003 is is looking forward to performing at home and abroad in the year 2004 and beyond.
