From the defiance of the title track, to the swank and lustiness of “Cherry Blossom,” to the punch of “That and More,” the songs on this album exhibit Emily’s wide musical range.
Bio / Background
Singer/songwriter and founder of Blue Oak Blues, Emily Hurd is no stranger to the music business. The Rockford, Illinois native now lives in Chicago, playing her alt-blues music at a steady line-up of gigs in the Midwest. Playing solo or with a band, Emily's music has taken on its own style. Her country and soul background and influences continue to come blaring through her heart-felt, universal lyrics and wailing melodies.
The songstress began playing the piano at age 7 and continues to home in on the honky-tonk, old-world sound that shaped her youth. Her biggest influences hold steady as Kris Kristofferson, Hoagie Carmichael, Django Reinhardt, Etta James, and Scott Joplin. Currently, Big Bill Broonzy has captured her fancy.
She is now finishing her fourth record "Love In Flats," which will be available soon on CDBaby.
↓ more ↓The songs on Emily's cds come to life with the addition of players Adam Markunas, Pierce Doerr, Jimmy Tomasello, Gregg Ostrom, Eric Delli Bovi, Michael Schenkelberg, Steve Doyle, Jillian Hicks, and Scott Ligon.
Aside from thanking the players, Emily likes to pay continuous homage to music lovers everywhere for having such eclectic and interesting tastes in music—giving all musicians a shot at making music their full-time profession. Also, she thanks the people at North Branch Studio for putting up with all of the live recordings that result in banquet-like smorgasbords and beer and scotch samplings.
Today Emily continues lugging her acoustic piano and keyboard from apartment to apartment as she moves across the country following interests ranging from culinary schooling to environmentalism to country music publishing to inner city roots music programs. You may call her "unfocused." She calls herself "renaissance."
As always, she is most at home playing live music, and she thanks you for listening.
