whimsical, historical, relevant and irreverant....Years is one of ellen cherrys' 2005 releases that really showcases the folk and acoustic side of this musician.
Bio / Background
ellen cherry is the pseudonym and musical brainchild of Baltimore-based singer/songwriter/musician/recording engineer/producer/designer Kristin Putchinski.
Well, at least that's what it says on her business card.
Born and raised outside of Dallas, Texas, Kristin studied piano and 'cello during her school days and then while in college, studying for her totally impractical BA in military history, Kristin picked up the guitar and realized that she could write lyrics and melodies that people seemed to enjoy hearing. She formed a couple of bands and has been performing as ellen cherry for the last 9 years. Touring throughout the country as a solo artist and as a band, Kristin has managed to produce 10 recorded works, including 4 full length albums. She's been fortunate to share a bill with artists Glenn Tilbrook, Shannon McNally, Josh Ritter, Allison Moorer, Mary Fahl and countless other independent musicians throughout the country.
↓ more ↓Frustrated by the constrictions at others' studios of time and money, Kristin decided to set herself up with her own hard-disk recording studio (Wrong Size Studios was officially opened to the public in July 2005,) and the experiments from that initial set up became the June 2004 ellen cherry release, "the dizzy pleasure club.” She had already scored a full-length feature film earlier in the year and was starting to work on yet another independent film in the late summer of 2004 (soundtrack released July 2005 with the premiere of the film, entitled “re*dress: songs from the film For the Want of a Queen.”) With "the dizzy pleasure club," and yet another 2005 release “Years,” Kristin was able to fully understand what it means to be a completely independent musician. She wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered all of these works and is currently hard at work with Darin Lang of Down There Studios on the 2006 ellen cherry release. Kristin is also working on the score to a short stop animation film due out in 2006.
Kristin divides her time between her own music with ellen cherry, writing and recording music for film, being head engineer at the Studio, providing ‘cello tracks for other musicians, and the various side projects with which she's involved. ellen cherry’s 2006 schedule already includes rotation through clubs, colleges, and festivals throughout the East Coast and 4 nationwide tours. She is currently playing her own original music as both a acoustic solo act and full band. Her side projects include playing with the Scarborough Affair, a Simon and Garfunkel tribute duo with Drew Vervan; performing and recording “standards” (including neo-standards) with classical guitarist Brock Fanning; playing guitar and doing vocals for the alt-Irish, '80s and 90s cover band Move Like Seamus; and playing keys, guitar and backing vocals for Westminster based roots rock band, June Star.
