a tightly polished collection of thought provoking music set within the realm of moody textures and stormy rhythms.
Editorial review
One would never imply that the members of signing einstein lack talent, because they are very talented musicians. For their debut self-titled album, they have selected original compositions with an '80s adult contemporary quality. For most of the material found on the album, the band lacks a hook and fails to employ a unique front in its presentation. These weak links in their musical chain could deny them public recognition and appreciation. They have strong compositions blended with equally forceful lyrics, but the melodies have a character that is simply too familiar to grab a listener. "Heart Beating" is one of the more exciting pieces from the album. This comes via the expressive lead vocals from Gina Gonzalez. The solo instrumental breaks are also high points in "Heart Beating," as Dave Uhrich screams with flaming lead guitar phrases complemented by Vincent Varco's riffs coming from his extensive repetoire of keyboard accents. "Hit Me Like a Train" does just that -- it hits the listener with the force of a fast-moving train. This song shows that the band is able to put out creative original tunes. The sound is truly their own, with a unique beat being the foundation for the instrumental and vocal expression that fills this piece with extreme vibrance. For a debut album, with two songs that deserve mention, one would consider this a great learning experience for a band. signing einstein needs to focus on their own unique and original sound if they are to be noticed. With a couple of the tunes from the album, they display the ability to create music that has a signature quality. After one listen to this album, most will contemplate the future of signing einstein. What will their destiny be if they make much-needed changes in the direction of their repetoire? The future looks bright if they look in a new direction; without it, to coin an '80s phrase, signing einstein is destined to crash and burn. ~ Larry Belanger, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
This captivating trio has achieved a tightly polished collection of thought provoking music set within the realm of moody textures and stormy rhythms.
A concept is born. Early in 1999, founding members Joe Nuccio and Vince Varco were seeking suitable talent to record their songs. Having been involved creatively off and on for over fifteen years, they knew that the search would not be easy. They placed the ads, scoured the clubs, went to open mics and guitar jams... looking for the right 'genius' to join them.
After many auditions, formal and informal, Joe and Vince decided to let their preconceived notions abate. No longer the search for the perfect male vocalist. After one listen to Gina Gonzalez they were convinced. She was instantly comfortable with the material. They felt the magic, and the equation was growing.
The next variable came in the form of well-known guitarist Dave Uhrich.
↓ more ↓This 'einstein' listened to the demo and was convinced that he could provide the necessary elements. Joe and Vince heard Dave and agreed. The fundamental properties were set.
After teaming up with Chicago legend, engineer Jim Godsey, the recording sessions began. Joining them were drummer Randy Harrah, and guitarist Abdul Hakim, who provided some additional tracks. The resulting compilation was mastered March 2001 and released by JNI Records June 2001.
CORE MEMBERS
- Lead Vocalist: Gina Gonzalez
Gina has the voice of an angel, with a delivery like the devil. She has spent her whole life performing and with she does just that, perform. Although Gina has been compared to vocalists ranging from Bonnie Raitt to Sarah McLachlan, one thing is certain. Her voice will move you
- Bass Guitar: Joe Nuccio
Joe has played his bass from Anchorage to Los Angeles. A wordsmith at heart, he has provided us with an introspective look at individuals. Some nice, some not so. His bass playing has been likened to Roger Waters and Geddy Lee. With enough bottom end to tear it down, and groove to make you move, Joe spells out the lessons learned.
- Keyboards: Vincent Varco
This award-winning multi-instrumentalist has been a fixture on the Chicago music scene for the last fifteen years. His contribution ranges from classically inspired arrangements to swirling walls of sound. Vince's subtle use of colors gives this music a voice that cannot be forgotten. The textures he chooses are reminiscent of Pink Floyd, ever-present, yet carefully under-stated.
SESSION PLAYERS
- Guitar: Dave Uhrich
Dave is renown in rock guitar circles around the world. An accomplished and astonishingly versatile player, his interpretation is the perfect compliment to the material.
- Guitar: Abdul Hakim
Rhythm guitar master Abdul Hakim is one of Chicago's foremost contributors to the World Beat genre. His work appears on "Time To Decide" and "Wipe The Pages Clear".
- Drums: Randy Harrah
Randy Harrah is a session player whose insistent rhythms provide a rock solid foundation for the music. He collaborated with Vince, conceptualizing much of the drum material.
