Bio / Background
Drumplay celebrates over ten years of music-making, exploring world rhythms with the use of ashiko, congas, djembe, drumkit and miscellaneous percussion instruments such as balafon, xylomarimba and vibraphone. Winner of Best World Music Act 2002 in the Cleveland Free Times Music Awards, Drumplay creates original music they call "rhythmprovisations". The group is inspired by African, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms as well as Middle Eastern motifs. Their new CD features the Indian "shruti box" and wind instruments such as conch and trident shells.
"Under the Map of the World Where I Sleep" was recorded at the Spirit of 66 in Verviers, Belgium, in May 2002, during Drumplay's first European tour. Visit www.photorock.com for reviews and photos of the band. The recording includes Cuyahoga County, Ohio, poet laureate, Daniel Thompson, accompanying the group with his powerful poetry, which speaks to the human condition. Mr.
↓ more ↓Thompson was a civil rights activist in the 1960s and a member of the Freedom Riders. He was on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s staff in that decade; and he continues today to be a champion of the homeless and downtrodden.
Besides his work with Drumplay, Daniel Thompson has written two books of poetry: "Even the Broken Letters of the Heart Spell Earth", published by Bottom Dog Press; and "Famous in the Neighborhood", a self-published chapbook.
