Surf Rock (California New Wave Beach Pop)
Bio / Background
DRIFTING SAND...drifting facts:
Drifting Sand began in 1993 when surf dudes Surfer Spud and Surfer John noticed that birds can't surf and that sharks sometimes travel in pairs. Surfer Spud named the band Drifting Sand after driving by a sign of the same name on Highway One on the way to Santa Cruz, CA
Debut single was the double "A" sided Birds Can't Surf / Shark! Shark! and was released on surf-colored vinyl as a limited-edition 45 record on the band's own Pina Colada Records.
Original guitarist Surfer John left to pursue his golf band, then rejoined only to leave again to fuel his belly around the turn of the millennium.
Performed in Episode I: Battle of the Surf Bands at Slim's in SF against arch rivals Hayness Surf.
↓ more ↓It was a close battle but Drifting Sand won!
Debut CD Surfpop, produced by SF's legendary Lester Temple, was released in 1999 and featured fun songs like Perfect Wave, Sand Is Your Friend, Root Beer Float and new versions of the band's Birds Can't Surf and Shark! Shark!
Surfpop also featured a bonus track of almost an hour's worth of soothing surf sounds that one drifting fan remarked as her favorite song on the CD!
Kenney Dale Johnson, Chris Isaak's drummer, played drums on Surfpop. Kenney recorded all of his drum parts in one afternoon session in between Chris Isaak gigs.
Song At The Mercy Of the Wave was the surf report theme, heard during the Howard Stern show on LIVE 105 for many years.
Three songs have made the Top 5 on Rodney on the Roq's show on the world-famous KROQ 106.7 in Los Angeles: First Time Surfin', Surfin' With Britney and the band's cover of the Beach Boys' All Summer Long, also featured on the Italian compilation American Graffiti Revisited.
Beach Boy Al Jardine is a fan and digs the song Surfin' With Britney!
The band have played several benefit events for the Surfrider Foundation and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk outdoor stage (twice!). That's where Jan & Dean performed!
Surfer Spud once had a girlfriend who dumped him after she heard Surfin' With Britney-she was upset that he wrote a song for Britney Spears and not her! Britney did receive a copy of the single and when she saw the cover, remarked, "Those guys are cute."
In the winter, the band become Drifting Snow and perform winter-themed tunes like Drifting Snow, Avalanche and Cold December Morning.
One drummer, Surfer Guert, quit the band in 2002 after he became convinced that his all-time favorite band Duran Duran were agents of the devil! He hasn't been heard from since.
A new album, simply titled Drifting Sand, produced by Diver Jon, Rock Serling and the band's own Surfer Spud was released on Brian Wilson's birthday in the summer of 2003 and found the band drifting in a psychedelic direction.
Mavericks surf legend and star of Riding Giants Jeff Clark made an appearance on the album, delivering a wicked story of what it's like to surf Mavericks.
A single and the band's epic Beach Boys tribute, California Myth, was also released and as a b-side, featured an electroclash cover of Brian Wilson's Smile classic Surf's Up.
The band has gone through several lineup changes over the years and has included members like Dana Point, Longboard Bill, Diver Jon, Don Patrol, Surfer Joe, Mountain Bike Mike, Surfer Guert, Seaborn the Sharkbiter, Goofyfoot Greg, Riptide, Stevo and Bam Bam. Founding member Surfer Spud has vowed to never break up with himself.
Opened up for Dick Dale in 2003 at Slim's nightclub in SF. Dick Dale invented surf music and told Drifting Sand they rocked!
Opened up for Nancy Sinatra in 2004 at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma. That's where Winona Rider's from!
Almost opened up for the Beach Boys once but were told the band were too big...not as in popular just too many people in the band and not enough room on stage.
Hope to sea you soon at a beach party or hangin' ten on a wicked wave!
Surf's up!
