Drew is a guitarist and singer/songwriter from New Jersey. His music is reminiscent of Tom Petty combined with a little Blues Traveler, Mark Knopfler and Barenaked Ladies. A blend of country, grinding rock and blues.
Bio / Background
Since my late teens I've been writing and recording my own music. I play the guitar, drums, keyboards, and sing so I had no trouble being my own backup band, I just had to find a way to record each part.
My first setup was some combination of a cassette deck, a portable tape player and a radio shack audio mixer, with a rat's nest of patch cords, RCA cables and wires all tangled up there at the bottom of my stereo cabinet. I would overdub and overdub, losing quality with every generation of recording. But it was an experience, and my first hands-on introduction to recording and overdubbing.
From there I went through the 4-track and 8-track recording phases. Now I record all of my material directly into my computer and do all of my mixing and mastering in the digital domain. It's a far cry from that original "state of the art" set up back in the day.
Typically I sequence the drum tracks using a keyboard workstation, or using my digital mixing software on the computer.
↓ more ↓After refining the drum tracks I begin recording the rest of the instruments, typically a rhythm guitar part first, then I add the bass and other stuff once the main song structure is recorded. Vocals are last, and sometimes various parts are rerecorded during the mixing process if something doesn't sound quite right.
The drums are still being played by the computer so I can go back and make changes to the arrangement or add fills and additional parts before finally making them part of the audio mix. From there I mix down, and master the tracks on the computer.
That's how No More Waiting was recorded. It took me quite a few months to record, actually I think it spanned most of a year. My next project, which I am currently working on, will feature real drums. I've also updated my recording software and studio in general.
All that I've learned producing the first CD will greatly benefit the quality and content of the next. For more information and updates check out my blog on DrewVics.com. You can find lyrics and studio notes about each track from No More Waiting on there too, plus reviews.
Thanks for stopping by.
