Roots Rock and Roll from America's Heartland
Bio / Background
The Down Trunks is a 4 piece rock and roll ensemble that exemplify the essence of midwestern music. We are constantly striving to create something new that still feels familiar. We blend punk, country, rock, blues, and jazz into a musical milkshake...always searching for something tangible and real that doesn't sound as contrived and programed as the bulk of music one hears lately. By ignoring specific genres and letting the song shape itself, we feel like we've created straight ahead grooves that remind one of what it's like to stop turning the dial on their radio and actually hear a song that doesn't make one want to puke. We currently are hanging our collective hats in the Kansas City metropoliton area. We play regionally throughout the midwest mostly on the I-70/I-35 corridors. We really just want to make music. Our approach is to not direct the energy too much on the inception of a song. Rather let the song take it's course.
↓ more ↓Sort of like a jam bands free flowing form, and yes we do jam...but we do tend to distill it down to something a little more potent once we've collectively wrapped our minds about where the song is leading us. It's kind of like Keith Richards said. We don't really write the songs so much as act as lightning rod for the music. That kind of sounds like divine intervention which isn't exactly what we mean, but sometimes if you have ever played music, as I'm sure a ton of the people who have bothered to read this far down have, it does feel like the song has been handed down/given to you. And that is really something. Robert Johnson always said he made a deal with the devil, so maybe it ain't coming down from heaven or anything, but damn (and pardon the pun) it feels good.
The Down Trunks (on their better days) are:
Darren Matheson: Guitar/Mandolin/Vocals
David Noyce: Guitar/Vocals
Ryan Lickteig: Bass/Vocals
Chad Matheson: Drums/Vocals
