The Dipsomaniacs play melodic rock - spontaneous sounding arrangements that feel like low lights and American beer. Freakin Eureka is their much anticipated 2003 release, recorded this past year in Philadelphia at Indre Studios.
Editorial review
From the opening chords of "At the Bookstore," it's apparent that Chicago-based Phil Angotti is going to take the musical bull by the horns and steer you in the right and catchy pop direction. The simplicity and ingenuity in the songs make them instantly hummable and evoke images of XTC and Gin Blossoms. The use of acoustic guitar in much of the cavity-inducing pop is also noticeable during "Being Colin Blunstone," despite the voices heard near the song's conclusion. The harmonies are also well executed and timed perfectly, not to the point of saturation though. The tightness of the supporting cast is almost scary, possibly almost too tight for the overall effect. A three-part title track is slightly redundant, serving more like instrumental filler than anything else. Lyrically, the songs are not as quirky or elegant as some could be led to believe, as words seem almost secondary to the lovable feeling oozing from the disc. "Lazy Apple" and "She Whispers" are good examples of this. The best song is without question "Away From Me," a tune which should keep the listener's cranium bobbing for a while. A stellar record from yet another virtually unknown and underrated Midwesterner. ~ Jason MacNeil, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Freakin Eureka is the long-standing NJ garage rock band, Dipsomaniacs', much-anticipated follow-up to their successful 2001 release, The Life You're Faking.
The new album, which was recorded between October 2002 and May 2003 in the Big Room at Philadelphia's Indre Studios, features eleven new songs in the Dipsos' distinctive Replacements-via-Fountains of Wayne garage pop style.
Mick Chorba's songwriting on Freakin Eureka is as strong as ever, and the playing is more straight-ahead than it has ever been. Many of the loose ends are left tidily untied, capturing the live energy of the band with spontaneous-sounding arrangements that feel like low lights and American beer.
The Dipsomaniacs have been growing in popularity with each successive release.
↓ more ↓Since selling out the first pressing of their previous album, the band has toured regionally, made festival appearances at the Dewey Beach Pop Fest and the International Pop Overthrow Festivals in Los Angeles and New York, and contributed tracks to several compilation CDs including the popular Left of the Dial Replacements tribute album. They have also successfully worked to build a strong live fan base through regular shows in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Delaware and Baltimore.
The band now looks to expand their reach through more touring in support of Freakin Eureka, including a planned Midwestern stint that will revolve around their performance at the 2004 International Pop Overthrow festival in Chicago.
