Warm, passionate and fun female jazz vocal album.
Editorial review
The sophomore release from Portland-based songstress Sandy Dennison provides a bit of nostalgia mixed with what almost seems like a retro-modern jazz club sound. Dennison lists influences from Carmen McRae and Ella Fitzgerald, and her phrasing follows this to a fair degree. At the same time however, her vocal range seems limited, with strain coming out at the lower registers that she tends to stay in. The forced-nature of the sound is really the aspect that makes the sound seem engineered for nostalgia, performed for the purpose of mimicry perhaps. This likely isn't the case, but the mood is a little off throughout the album nonetheless. The standards chosen show an excellent ear for the classics, avoiding some of the most obvious pieces (the Rogers and Hart, Rogers and Hammerstein, Gershwin crowds), but still touching on some of the important songbook composers (there's still a Van Heusen number, an Irving Berlin number, and an excellent Billy Strayhorn piece). Dennison provides a fair outing, but doesn't quite break any expectations. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
I know, I know....a bio is important, and it's here, but what's happening NOW is what's happening!!!! I am so happy and blessed to be able to live my dream. Who'd have thought it?! If I can do it, you can do it. Let me tell you that I'm heard regularly on KMHD FM radio and performing throughout the Pacific Northwest with musicians that I only dreamed about. Here are some reviews for you, so I not only hope you like my CD, but that you'll hire my band to perform for you sometime.
"Sandy Dennison swings!!" Steve Christofferson
"A Stellar Act! Dennison is warm, passionate and fun!'

"Sandy Dennison bursts with good cheer. Her enthusiasm is one of her best assets and her snappy delivery works well in any venue."
Donna Kimura, JazzReview.

"Dennison consistently impresses audiences with her signature combination of a trailing vibrato that tugs at memories of Ella Fitzgerald and a lanquid sense of phrasing that will please fans of Lee Wiley, Barbara Lea and the like. Backed by the stellar complement of Vincent Frates and Andre St. James, Dennison has a fragile Carmen McRae sensuality that scandalizes the gaga innocence of Eisenhower-era pop jazz – and you'll thank her for it."
Tim Duroche, Willamette Week
Here's the bio! Growing up, on the East Coast, immersed in music…..country to Bach, Sandy listened to recordings by Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horn and Blossom Dearie; she was hooked. In her teens, Sandy was crazy for Doris Day and Shirley Bassey, then Cleo Lane and in her twenties was singing with a band of her own. Sandy studied with some of the best teachers in the Delaware Valley, including voice and stage presence under the watchful eye of Bucky Harris, and voice with Lenny Payton, former music coordinator on several New York based television shows. Sandy's appearing at venues throughout the Pacific Northwest.
