Bio / Background
Roar Furnes - DashN
I was born in Sula county (Norway) in 1975, and have two brothers and one sister. The music at the time was more like Kiss (the rock band) and the 80's just about to happen.
About the band Kiss:
I had lots of cassettes with Kiss, they really rocked at the time. My brothers didn't like them at all though. Well, to wrap it up, my cassettes are no more..because my brothers threw them out. :-S
For you all to understand how the music from me has evolved, you better read to part below:
Well it's the 80's (down the memorylane here) now and we had lots of bands like "Aha" in my country that made the sound of the 80's like we know on Vh1 and MTV flashbacks.. and futher more it was the time when we got us an used Commodore 64 (man, those machines was lots of fun) and lots of "original" games. I even played "Miami Vice the Game", before it was showing on TV.
And now the music begins to take part:
Once again we got us a new computer, this time it was the Amiga 500.
↓ more ↓A Computer that really had potential for production of games and music, where the ProTracker first was introduced to me as fine musical software (music program that used samplebased sounds). I made lots of songs with that program (which is now unfortunately lost). At first I had no musical abilities and only knew the song from the radio at that time and songs that others had made. With one song at the time I found out the notes and keys of the song and how it was made (hey I even played some songs by playing on the keyboard that the Amiga 500 had attached). With some training I began to make my own music, using the instruments that followed with each song (sorry about that Jogeir liljedahl and some others I have forgot the names of ;-)
Well that's enough talk about the Amiga. Now it was the PC age and I first began to make use of a software called "Cakewalk Apprentice" and as the program says, I was exactly that. I had only used track based software (letters and symbols instead of score and notes) and never thought about scores and pianorolls that this software had. Well, first things first. I had learned by looking at the songs how the music was made by notes and what instruments that was used with what (basses, leadvoices and drums etc.). This software looked very tough and really had me going there for a while. Well not really, for every software there is always some demo songs that functions like a tutoring teacher by showing what the program can do and not do. That way I learned how to make music like I do today and totally fail at it ..(hehe... I'm modest here ..) From friends, I found out that new versions of Cakewalk was released (this is almost where we are now today). This version really had potentional (I now had a PC 486 DX2 50Mhz with a Soundblaster AWE32), though some features was changed (I got over it). I made lots of songs by the same method I made songs on the Amiga 500, listening to other songs (this time it was MIDI and other music formats) and learning the ways of the MIDI programming.
Lots of songs later I have made about 30 songs (maybe I'm on the edge here but I think it was that amount) of more or less quality and more musical software did arrive on the Dial-Up based Internet at the time. One of those is Cakewalk 4.0 (that many thinks much hateful thoughts about, me not included), a program that was an improvement by the means of more space for longer songs and more support for different instruments setups. Many years later the music has changed and so had the PCs (a lot faster) and the birth of the software based synths was here. This is where Jan Hammer comes in.. When I listen to his music, the inspiration comes by and the songs are being made. Not to mention Mezzoforte, a band that I have been in a concert with.. Well, I was in the audience anyway.. Lots of inspiration comes from that band.
Inspiration is one factor when making music, another is instruments (in my case SoundFonts and SoftSynths).
Some tech stuff:
My PC setup now includes AMD Athlon XP-1800, a Soundblaster Audigy soundcard, 500MB RAM (nice for large SF2's and such) and many noisy fans. It wouldn't be complete without my Roland PC-180A (MIDI-keyboard Controller) and a Roland DP-6 Pedal switch (for those piano sequences).
I also have a Technics KN400 Keyboard, where many of my song ideas are born.
I have a Logitech PC speaker set and some nice headphones.
Here's some time facts about the machines I have had or still have:
Commodore 64 era 1984-1998
Amiga 500 era 1987-1993
PC era 1993-200x and counting
