Bio / Background
After releasing his debut album "Can't Get A Break" in June 2004 which birthed the Boston anthem "MASSterpiece" and its hard-hitting follow up "Contagious." Then on January of 2005 with four additional tracks including the straight-forward "Real Talk", DL, short for Daniel Laurent, re-released "Can't...Break" to more fanfare and praise. But due to the packaging (slim line casing and glossy tray card), the release was somewhat panned off a "good mixtape" or a "hot demo."
With the solid Self Made foundation already set, the questions of an "album" began surfacing and became louder as the months passed. With radio interviews, various venues played, numerous newspaper features and reviews, several mixtape appearances and the overwhelming public interest for a new DL album, it was evidently time to recreate.
January 2005, Daniel Laurent began working on his follow up and started piecing together the pieces as they appeared.
↓ more ↓"I didn't want to do a concept album, despite my desire to because the shelf life isn't too long. People like hot songs, but some songs you have to listen to the WHOLE album with skits to get the full effect and I know personally that I don't bother doing all of that so..." With the increasing talk of gun play, comparisons of lyrical ability to "crack" and lack of heart and soul, Daniel Laurent felt the need to construct The Suppression.
The Suppression means to stop the lackluster lyrics and presentation. To suppress is to put an end to forcibly and to subdue. "People have many misconceptions about how things work in regards to putting out product. There is a formula. Put out a mixtape, give it out, get on mixtapes, put out your own album, do your album by the same people that have worked on everyone else's to gurantee a certain standard and have the same producers and same studio and same cd pressers and same pricing for mixtapes and albums. The Suppression will shatter that. I have a top notch product and selling it at a discounted rate that applies to most wholesalers and I have a dvd that I edited and shot most of myself. The photos are great, the artwork is incredible and the symbol for The Suppression is banonkers! Wait and see. You will believe..."
From start to finish, the listener is engaged in a conversation with Daniel Laurent and never becomes bored with the direction of the dialogue. There are special guests appearances that will feature, but Daniel Laurent will not give insight to who they are. "It doesn't matter who's on it. The people on it are people that I respect and think bring a certain special something to the table. I didn't put them on there to garner more attention or try to squueze more sales. But believe me on this, they all have their own movements going and are in the grind like me. No MC Currygoats and Killer Beantowns, it's all people that you have heard of somehow and if you didn't respect their work before, you will respect it when hearing this."
