A prevalent form of reggae is dancehall. Dancehall is sometimes termed as ragga. It came into play in the 1980's after the death of Bob Marley and roots reggae was losing wind. This DJ dominated style featured computerized digital rhythms.
Bio / Background
WHO IS DAMASK?
Damask is a madman that walks the fine line between insanity and genius. He is a ticking human time bomb waiting to explode. Unlike the suicide bombers of the Middle East, his explosion does not kill or harm anyone. Damask is a dancehall reggae artist of Yoruba origin. Born Adedamola Lawal to Nigerian parents in Washington, DC, he is a product of the Diaspora. He lived in Lagos, Nigeria for over a decade and is very well aware of his culture and where he comes from. His musical influences include Fela, Supercat, Barrington Levy, Peter Tosh and Buju Banton to name a few. Damask and his music can be found on mp3.com, damask1.com, seveneyes.com, and in DJ boxes and record stores.
Many see Damask as fresh, lively, charming, amusing, and always interesting; someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well-balanced not to let it go to his head.
↓ more ↓He is somewhat of a chameleon; he can fit into any crowd - - with action, speech and mannerisms that are authentic and genuine. He first realized his penchant for the stage and music in general a decade ago. Since then he has been pursuing his goals relentlessly. His passion for performing has led him to many clubs and venues up and down the East Coast and has made him a commodity to other artists looking to juice up their songs and live performances. Modizel as he is also known (for his raw toned physique) has been in many studios and held so many microphones; he is an accomplished stage performer. Onstage he is the incarnate proof of Isaac Newton's law of motion; his performances are energetic to the point Inasha (inertia) has been added on to Damask as his tacit surname.
It is ironic the dice rolls of fate and destiny. Imagine an artist that hungers for the stage and loves to perform; he feeds off the energy of his audience and does unpredictable dance steps that he does not choreograph and afterwards cannot repeat. Imagine then, a schoolboy in his early teens presenting a speech from Julius Caesar to an assembly of his peers; knees shaking, voice barely audible and so nervous and desperately wishing the moment would end. Now there is nothing left to the imagination but the mystery behind the drive and motivation that fuels this madman. What will he do next? What is the next word that will be uttered out of his mouth? Damask wonders with you; he doesn't even know. All he knows is that the stage is his rubber room dimension. All you have to do is see him live or listen to his music. He will leave an impression so deep; you won't soon forget him.
