Brought to you from the bottom of her heart, Daisy May sings this collection of original tunes with a sweetness. "Heart Song" takes you through the many faces of love with tender composition and thoughtful lyrics.
Editorial review
After the Spartan simplicity of Daisy May's debut, the one-gal-with-a-guitar Sleepless, this Michigan-based singer and songwriter fills out her sound just a bit on her second album, 2004's Heart Song. Joined by a handful of acoustic accompanists (including multi-instrumentalist Seth Bernard, cellist Andrea Moreno-Beals, Dominic Suchyta on bass and banjo, resonator guitarist Luke Winslow-King and Drew Howard on pedal steel), Heart Song still possesses the same sort of elegance and clarity that made Sleepless so appealing, but the wider range of musical colors takes some of the burden off Daisy May's voice and gives these recordings a feel that's casual and richly detailed at the same time. "Sun" and "Simple Secrets Of The Heart" use the subtle dynamics of Daisy May's band to bring out the finer points of the lyrics, and the results are wonderful, while the players display an admirable sense of restraint, never overplaying but using delicate washes of sound to add effective tonal coloring to the songs. Daisy May has remembered the wisdom of "less is more" even while adding guest musicians to her second album, and Heart Song is all the better for it. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Daisy May
(May Erlewine)
Born into a family of musicians (her dad was a blues musician in the 60's, her uncle is a guitar maker, etc.), May Erlewine has been playing music all her life. She learned to sing and play piano at an early age, and her acoustic guitar is seldom far from her side. Erlewine, who was home schooled, paid her singer-songwriter dues in her late teens with several years of hitchhiking back and forth across the U.S., even riding freight trains, and always writing songs and playing her music.
Daisy May has worked a variety of rooms, mostly on the East Coast and in the Midwest, everything from the Fez, in NYC, Club Passim, in Boston, to a string of venues and festivals in her home state of Michigan, stretching from the Ark in Ann Arbor to the Calumet Theatre in the Upper Peninsula. Her inspired songs and powerful clear voice have a sweetness that keeps audiences calling for more.
