A song journal of her life so far. "Sleepless" is a beautiful collection of simple, personal songs with timeless, heartful depth.
Editorial review
Singer and songwriter Daisy May (aka May Erlewine) presents her music in its simplest form on her debut album, 2003's Sleepless; these thirteen songs were recorded with just May's voice accompanied by her own acoustic guitar, except for an occasional vocal harmony overdub or harmonica line here and there. Thankfully, Daisy May's music is strong and vital enough to communicate without a lot of added gingerbread; the spunky lilt of her voice is clear and forceful and carries the self-confidence of a champion cowgirl along with the smarts of a woman who has a library card and isn't afraid to use it. Daisy May's songs are a bit on the wordy side, but they're never pretentious and she tells her stories with a keen sense of detail that gives her work an engaging sense of emotional honesty. Sleepless is modest in its execution, but suggests Daisy May has the makings of a major talent, and between her terrific voice and fine songs, this disc is an impressive calling card for a new artist. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Born into a family of musicians (her dad traveled with Bob Dylan, her uncle is a guitar maker, etc.) May Erlewine has been playing music all her life. She learned to sing at an early age and her acoustic guitar is seldom far from her side. Erlewine who was home schooled paid her singer-songwriter dues in her late teens with several years of hitchhiking back and forth across the U.S. Even riding freight trains and always writing songs and playing her music. She made her living playing music on the road working coast-to-coast from the subways of Philadelphia to the California Coast.
Erlewine has worked a variety of venues mostly on the East Coast and in the Midwest. Everything from Tinker Street Cafe in Woodstock, NY (where Dylan used to play). To a string of cafes and coffee houses in the midwest. Streatching from Ann Arbor and Detroit to Grand Rapids and up to Traverse City and Manistee.
↓ more ↓Her inspired songs and powerful clear voice have a sweetness that keeps audiences calling for more. May Erlewine lives and has her studio in Big Rapids, Michigan.
