A steaming cauldron of original and trad-inspired world music executed with intense passion, innovation and virtuosity.
Bio / Background
The Crooked Fiddle Band are a young, high-octane four piece from Sydney, Australia, who rally around the whirlwind violin of Jess Randall to brew up a steaming cauldron of original and trad-inspired world music.
Supporting the dark and turbulent violin is a rapid-fire rhythm section comprising Mark Stevens (double bass, charango), Joe Gould (percussion, drums) and Gordon Wallace (guitar, bouzouki). The band is occasionally augmented by the smooth and sexy voice and cello of Hannah Croke.
From furious Romanian melodies, bluegrass swampstompers and Celtic reels executed with a punk sensibility to tragic gypsy airs and Appalachian laments, the band’s energetic performances delight a truly diverse audience with hard-core folkies, earthchildren, inner city punks and teenyboppers all drawn in by the swung groove, tear-jerking sorrow and mosh-pit intensity.

The Crooked Fiddle Band’s innovative new sound has proven to be a hit on stages large and small at Australian festivals such as Peats Ridge, Illawarra, Hawkesbury Fiddle Festival, Woodford, the National Folk Festival, LoveJam Festival and the Folk Alliance Australia showcase with crowds enthralled by a show that hums with the intensity of the here-and-now whilst resonating with the roots of musical traditions.
Local Sydney gig highlights include lively performances at The Vanguard, The Gaelic Theatre and The Harp, as well a rapidly growing reputation for extravaganzas that pack out both the Roxbury and Excelsior in Sydney’s bohemian quarter of Glebe. Recently the band has played alongside The Beez (Germany), Chris Demeanour (Canada), Kaya, Brian Campeau, Aminah and The Extended Family.
