An eclectic new album combining a seamless union of rock guitar, dreamlike ambience, and Corey's signature style of lush retro harmonies. "We're All Stars" maintains contemporary appeal while cleverly delivering reflective moments of the 70's classic rock
Editorial review
The album's anonymous cover art and title suggest a much less interesting and more mainstream release than Corey Andrew's debut release actually delivers. Andrew has an expressive, soulful voice that easily shifts from the singer/songwriter vibe of the poppy "Next to You" to the Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips-style dream pop psychedelia that colors a number of the album's strongest songs. Like Stew, the L.A. based singer/songwriter who also records with his bands the Negro Problem and the Lullabies, Andrew acknowledges the R&B tradition but refuses to be pigeonholed by it; a song like the gorgeous, expansive title track owes at least as much to the Cocteau Twins as it does to Donny Hathaway. With slightly stronger songwriting and a bigger recording budget -- over the course of 46 minutes, some of the songs start to blend together more than they should -- Corey Andrew could be a formidable talent, and his debut album hints at better things to come. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Corey Andrew refuses to be "assigned" to the categories of Hip-Hop and R&B simply because of the color of his skin. In the tradition of eclectic black artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Seal, Corey continues to break down the stereotypes in contemporary popular music. Corey's vast musical influences include the legendary
Cat Stevens,Velvet Underground, and Pink Floyd.
Determined to delve into new musical directions, Corey is an artist more likely to be found setting trends rather than following them. Boasting a powerful yet smooth vocal ability, the driven performer takes pride in being a musical storyteller, finding the common thread of human existence as a basis for which to write and sing about.
As a soulful tenor, Corey Andrew's voice at times is reminiscent of a young Donnie Hathaway.
↓ more ↓His dynamic stage persona and his ability to go from velvety pop music vocal deliveries to a hard edged folk-rock vocal style has garnered recent comparisons to rock legends Mick Jagger and Jimmi Hendrix.
While concentrating on his recording career, Corey is also launching a music company that will focus on creating songs for motion pictures and Broadway musicals. Currently "Forgive Me" one of his most unique songs, about a friend's drunken driving accident which resulted in a fatality can be heard on the soundtrack to the motion picture, Xpatriots.
In a market saturated with meaningless pop music mediocrity, July 1, 2003 promises to be a milestone day for Corey Andrew as Xcalibur Records presents his long awaited debut album, "We're All Stars". The album is a breath of fresh air as it seamlessly combines contemporary rock guitar, celestial dreamlike ambience and lush background harmonies. In its entirety, "We're All Stars" maintains contemporary appeal while cleverly delivering moments reflective of the 70's classic rock era.
With talent, dedication, and a unique style and sound all his own, Corey Andrew is destined to become a musical force to be reckoned with.
