Sometimes catchy as hell, sometimes quite strange and sometimes heartbreakingly tender. The Citizens combine great songcraft with experimentation and stand-out live performance.
Bio / Background
As heard on MTV, and NPR's All Songs Considered.
From Delusions of Adequacy:
"Not only is this album a complete entity that demands to be listened to from start to finish, but the band members have crafted a blend of pop and rock that not only draws on a variety of styles, but blends them in to something wholly unique. And the band members do it with mindful precision, melody to spare, and idiosyncratic lyrics. In short, Post Cro-Magnon Drift is a joy to listen to...Fans of any sort of quirky pop or rock should get their hands on Post Cro-Magnon Drift immediately and let the bliss-out begin."
From MusicOMH London:
"If you haven't heard of The Citizens already, it's about time you did. Positioned musically somewhere between a proggier Brian Jonestown Massacre and a more psychedelic Mekons, their new album Post Cro-Magnon Drift is a true gem, undiscovered and waiting to be unearthed...
↓ more ↓t's catchy, hugely listenable and great summer music, so make sure you make the best of it while the sunshine lasts. In fact, there's so much else to say about it there's hardly need to mention the lovely touch of breaking the track listing in two on the sleeve notes, as if this was a proper record (so much more substantial than your new-fangled CD/MP3 nonsense) but I'm going to anyway, because these sort of things make me happy and show that there's just that little bit more thought going into all this than usual...it really is something special and if your local record shop isn't stocking it, hit them over the head with a big stick until they do.
From Pitchfork:
""Interstate Prayer" is one of the band's best songs yet, a song about a kid who goes road-tripping alone to follow in the footsteps of his heroes, principally Jack Kerouac. The lines "He read about it in books/ His friends and family giving him looks/ When you're a rebel/ They do that," encapsulate the naïvete of the character's quest for identity through travel over a burbling bassline, thoughtful drums and floating guitar. Opener "The Surfer" is a mini-suite that begins as a clear, aquatic pop song with a crystalline chorus and then simmers down for a slow, plodding build-up to a crunching finale."
The Citizens Bio As Understood by guitarist Thom Loubet:
Mark and I played together for the first time in a cramped NY rehearsal studio with the experimental funk octet, Earthdriver. Then, Mark asked me to play guitar on his own project. I went way up to the Bronx with a bag of effects and no idea what to expect. What I found was the thing I’d been practicing for since I was eleven.
Jason and John (the rhythm section) hopped on board next, lending their unique, Oregon spawned pulse to the project. Lastly, Citizen Katherine joined us with her laptop, Rhodes and voice. Bringin' the Science! —
AND THEN THERE WERE FIVE...
We’ll be the first ones to tell you this band goes a lot of places sonically. It’s who we are as a group. We’ve all been around the block, fronting the half-formed or riding along as sidemen in sidecars. It was fun, and it made us good. But this is ours. This is a fusion of everything we’ve learned, and a chance to play only what we love.
