Bio / Background
China Blue is an internationally exhibiting artist who is interested in how sound shapes space. She uses sound to create environments, and sees it as energy that is either located in a specific area or energy that totally fills a room. For a city wide exhibition of her work in Dijon, France, she created an ambient sound installation piece that was a meditation room, inside the room a 5.1 sound piece was heard that was based on the sounds of heart beats, sonar and breathing. She also created a quirky installation in a hallway of the specialized sounds of a ping pong game. The speakers were positioned to mimic the positioning of the players so the viewer was then able to stand in the hallway and hear the piece played overhead and moving from wall to wall. She has also designed some sound trees called Meditation Trees, which had speakers in them and a micro processor with movement sensor. The Meditation Trees emitted mantras.
↓ more ↓This interest in sound reflects the human experience in relationship to a locale, and establishes the concept that space is filled and shaped by those who live in it and use it. She has shown in museums, non-profit centers and galleries in Sweden, Finland, France and the United States. She has been reviewed by New York Times, Art in America, Art Forum, artCritical, NY Arts to name a few. She has been interviewed by France 3 (TV) and was featured in the film “Com-mu-nity” for American Society of Architectural and was a featured artist for an annual meeting of the Acoustic Society. She is a Visiting Fellow at Brown University and will teach a course there called “Sound Art.”
“Smart & sexy work”

"The bleeding edge of creative sound"
Lance Massey, Creative Director, NeuroPop Sound Design
“…a little Duchampian mischievousness”,
Ken Johnson, NY Times
“Blue succeeded in encouraging viewers to investigate the energetic and diverse content of the gallery – which in this case was twittery, and a little bit literary.”
Sarah Valdez, Art in America
