Award-winning children's book author and poet Charles R. Smith Jr. blends rhythm and poetry to stimulate the mind.
Bio / Background
"I wanted to create something that would appeal to all ages." So says award-winning children's book author, poet and photographer Charles R. Smith Jr. about his debut cd "Portrait Of A Poet."
"Portrait" blends Smith's love of music with his gift for visual wordplay. "I've been taking photographs since I was 16 and have a degree in that, so I'm a visual artist at heart. My skill with a camera has helped me become a very visual writer because I approach them the same way. When the time came to decide what the theme and title of the project would be it was a a no-brainer to present a portrait of myself to the world."
What emerges from this blender of visual imagery and music is an insight into the art, craft and inspiration of a true artist. All of the topics covered in the poems reflect subjects important to Mr. Smith: hard work, education, creative expression, dedication to craft, dreams, basketball, self-esteem and family.

"Family is extremely important to me because they are the only people that will always love you no matter what. My father passed away back in '99 and he was a big part of my life so I want to try to pass on some of the wisdom he gave me that made me the man I am today."
Charles creates children's books that feature his poetry as well as his photographs. Right now there are twenty titles with his name on it but creating a cd was a completely different animal. He decided to handle the music production himself because of the challenge it presented.
"I decided to tackle the production because the creation of music was a process I wanted to expose myself to. I had an idea of what worked and what didn't because I've listened to so many different styles of music since I was a kid. My poetry takes elements from music in terms of rhythm and structure so I was excited to find out what would await me on the other side of the process. It wasn't easy but with today's technology and all of the information out there now about music production I was able to rise to the challenge."
What came out of that process is bumping old-school 808 beats, infectious rhythm, pounding percussion, jazzy horns and intricate yet accessible wordplay.
"People will want to call my style of poetry 'rap' and that's cool, but it is poetry. It's just set to a beat. The second half of the album is all of the poems done 'a capella' because I wanted people to understand that when you strip the music away, the words still stand on their own."
Charles grew up in southern California. He graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography and then moved to New York CIty to pursue his dream of taking pictures for magazines like Sports Illustrated and Rolling Stone. After the birth of his first child he moved to Poughkeepsie, New York where he currently resides. Did he ever think he'd be where he is now?
"Life is all about journeys; sometimes you know where you're going, sometimes you don't, but if you educate yourself, participate in life and dream, you never know where it'll take you."
