Bio / Background
In This Town is Annie and Rod Capps’ fifth release and showcases Annie Capps’ most compelling songwriting to date. It’s a cohesive collection of vignettes told from the perspective of both observer and actor before backdrops ranging from a friendly town café to an empty house; a dark bar to a front porch; a jail cell to the wide open road. The result is a mélange of simple, evocative stories about familiar human emotions delivered with the “appealing mixture of confession and sass” that is signature Annie…
“Capps has a way of starting a song with an image that’s simple, yet arresting enough to propel you through the ensuing developments, which often covers quite a bit of territory.” Jim Manheim, Ann Arbor Observer
Chris Rietz of the Lansing State Journal says "...the folkie- songwriter genre can seem so overpopulated and colorless ... Annie Capps is an exception, and the reasons why make a fairly long list. ...
↓ more ↓The songs are deliciously underwritten, almost snapshots, and the best are vignettes that suggest vastly more than they depict."
From the opening bars of In this Town, Capps paints vivid characters who have one foot out the door, on the edge of fleeing their less desirable reality for someplace better. In her more personal songs, she battles some of life’s bigger questions, and straddles the threshold between happiness and not, between contentment and not.
Married for 13 years, and making music together for many more, the Cappses have a sound that reflects their deep and intuitive understanding of each other. In this new record, Rod handles acoustic and electric guitars, most of the bass guitar, and the tenor banjo with rootsy grace. Annie’s clear, earthy voice carries her rich and captivating melodies. The simple arrangements and uncluttered production keep these sweet, somber, tender and frisky songs in the spotlight where they belong.
