Buttercup took a shot of 1800 and stretched her legs across the chair next to her. "I'm the old-fashioned kind," she purred. "I like classic country, but I aint gonna pretend the last 40 years didnt happen."
Bio / Background
Meet Buttercup: two southern sisters with smokey voices, iffy reputations, a fiddler, a lead guitarist and a drummer, getting together in the drummers basement to exhume long-buried honky-tonk songs, mixing in classic country favorites and creating new stuff. Buttercup's originals pay homage to old-timey country without ignoring post-Hank civilization -- i.e., punk, Paxil and David Lynch.
Buttercup was born out of a big-eyed hillbilly crush on George Jones, but when one of the sisters fell madly in love with the inevitably unattainable Townes Van Zandt, their songs took on a little darkness.
Buttercup's debut album, Evil for You, brings that basement to your living room. Like the early Country and Western music they admire, Buttercup works hard to retain the raw simplicity and humanity that made them fall in love with the genre to begin with.

Already one of my favorite albums. Raw country, the way it should be. Hard driving. Every cut puts you right there in some honky-tonk bar, the pause that refreshes. "Hellhound Romeo" and "Half Empty" are alone worth the price of admission, highlighting those smokey voices and "iffy reputations." I'm guessing (hoping) we'll hear a lot more of this group. I'm already impatient for the next album.
