Wendy Bucklew plays music that will rock and cradle you.
Bio / Background
Respected for her prominent position within the now famous music scene in Atlanta, Georgia, Wendy Bucklew has taken her performing and songwriting talents to a new level of maturity and excellence. Though it's true that this is a common introduction in a typical artist's biography (i.e. talented... original...passionate...blah, blah, blah) one listen to Bucklew's repertoire will confirm what would simply be hype to the unfamiliar ear.
To give the reader a grasp of Bucklew's style, the closest comparison would be Joni Mitchell meets Janis Joplin in the 90's. Even this is not so much an accurate description of Bucklew's style as it is of her lyrical talent and her ability to emote. Listening to her lyrics will give you an idea of the poet behind the performer. This is someone who lives and feels the words she belts and whispers.
↓ more ↓To follow up her previous projects, "Rage in the Ring" and "Painting Sidewalks," Bucklew's new 11 song recording, "Asleep in the Swing," is a fine example of a talent coming into her own. ("Asleep in the Swing" is slated for national release in June 1998.) Wendy Bucklew's intricate guitar ability moves beyond the "pretty-good-for-a-girl" simple chording and rhythm style -- this is a woman who utilizes everything from leads, harmonics and percussion to push her point across.
On "Asleep in the Swing," Bucklew once again teams up with Producer/Recording Engineer, DeDe Vogt of Sound and Fury Studios in Atlanta. Engineer Jim Zumpano (Aretha Franklin, Babyface, Whitney Houston), who worked with Wendy in 1990 on Rage in the Ring, lent his mixing expertise at Ricky Keller's Southern Living Studios. Weaving a tight thread throughout the new album are the classy bass-lines of Dede Vogt and the melodic rocking drum sounds of longtime Bucklew drummer, Jason Mogi. This dynamic rhythm section will also tour with Bucklew in support of "Asleep in the Swing." Adding their own flavors to these tasty songs, guest musicians/friends include Michelle Malone, Lounge Lizard's Jane Scarpantoni (guest cellist for Patti Smith, Jewel, Natalie Merchant), and Michael Lorant (Big Fish Ensemble).
Bucklew's prior release, Painting Sidewalks, earned a Gridbound position on Gavin's Triple A chart, airplay on virtually every Triple A station in the country, and positive reviews in the Triple A industry rags (CMJ, Gavin, FMQB, Hard Report, Album Network). These achievements have resulted in a strong radio foundation and a fan base eager for the new material.
Wendy Bucklew arrived on the music scene in Atlanta in 1988. Since then, she has performed in front of audiences across the U.S. that range from 20 to 70,000 people. She is comfortable solo and with a band. Her experience in working with a band has resulted in a move past the acoustic balladeer labels and into the adult rock realm.
Having returned to her native California, Bucklew hopes to reach a broader audience with the new songs and tour the album to create live performances that rock and cradle its listeners. The cd's artwork and layout are also from the hands of the one who brings us the songs. Involved in all levels of her career, she is motivated and qualified for the next level, whatever that may be...
