ABOUT COBY BROWN & THE 11:11'S
In 4th and 5th grades, my Aunt Heather took me to see the Kinks, Jimmy Cliff, and Todd Rundgren. It made me want to be a musician. It also showed me that great music comes in all flavors.
Post college, I moved from my hometown of Boston to NYC and spent a year or so forcing myself up on stage every couple of weeks until something good came out. When it did, I got a band together and we made a record called Homesick. We toured a lot of places that looked like Blair Witch country.
Despite getting some nice press and a lot of new fans, we soon went our separate ways.
↓ more ↓Followed this up with a solo ep produced by Gregg Wattenberg (Five For Fighting, Eve 6, Chantal Kreviazuk) called Truth Shines. The results hopefully hinted at a corner being turned to less is more. In the meanwhile, I met a girl and moved to LA full time.
Everyone says how miserable it is in LA, but try a couple Februaries on the New York State Thruway. In the past couple years, I have been lucky enough to get together with the mighty 11:11's, with whom I continue to press my luck. We are currently making a record with producer Justin Stanley (Nikka Costa) that chronicles the fumblings, romantic and otherwise, of an east coast kid dodging winters out west.
SOME PRESS.......
"FOUR STARS…. Remember you heard it here first: Coby Brown is gonna be the next huge thing in the world of music. Singer/songwriter Brown's voice gives new meaning to the word 'sublime.'"

These tight but relaxed performances are a joy to hear. I anticipate that Coby Brown will continue to draw widespread kudos…...”

"Coby Brown combines the solid blues inflection of Eric Clapton and the easy pop sense of Squeeze....This is tight and smooth like the music at your favorite club with very good company."
– Gajoob.com
“ Coby Brown possesses a remarkable voice, best compared to Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers mixed in with some Spencer Davis…. “
– Columbia Daily Spectator
“Not since the release of Under the Table and Dreaming, the Dave Matthews Band’s first major label release, have I heard such beautifully crafted, meaningful lyrics..”

Coby Brown: Truth Shines
Rating: 5 stars
Favorite Tracks: I'm Not Leaving, The Distance
There was something about this CD that struck me, and lured me right in. When I heard that Gregg Wattenberg (Five for Fighting, Eve 6, Chantal Kreviazuk) had worked on it, I knew that was part of it. (Big Chantal fan, here.) Brown's vocals resonate a little Pete Schmidt, but his tempo is mostly upbeat throughout this rock collection that takes a detour down a bit of an abstract road ala Marc Broussard. The songs are all crisp, and well thought out, radiating meaning and emotion. All of them are good, I just wish there were more.

Coby Brown/ Truth Shines
An independently released EP proving the days of needing major label support to get a crisp, professional production sound are long dead, Coby Brown’s Truth Shines is the kind of thinking-person’s pop that holds appeal easily for fans of any number of adult alternative chart toppers.
An artist packing a significant amount of personality into a relatively small package, Brown is young, and sounds it, but is soulful as well, and has an energy to him that most NYC singer/songwriters would shy away from, but is unquestionably authentic given such genuine delivery.
Mostly acoustic instrumentation gives this short release an earthy sound and stands in contrast to the elaborate production and song arrangements. Brown’s band is wellassembled like a Lego racecar and comprises strings and keys for that extra bit of something special. If it was wine, it’d be a decent cabernet. Not at all dry.
