Milayne Jackson and Gary Brooks…Goin’ With The Flow
“A powerful, glistening, state-of-the-art production of rockin’ R & B homages to everyday-life struggles”
Gary Brooks released his first C.D., “Lost in the Shuffle”, in May of 2000. Six months later he began recording his second C.D., “Milayne Jackson and Gary Brooks…Goin’ with the Flow”. They completed and released it six years later in October of 2006! Milayne and Gary both worked full-time day jobs and averaged 150 gigs a year during the creation of the project recorded at Tony’s House, a studio owned by Tony Perrino, keyboardist for Dan Toler Band. So, finding the time in everyone’s schedule to record was difficult.
Greg Haymes, music critic for the Times Union, Albany, N.Y., wrote: “six years is a looooong time to spend making a record but, in this case, the wait was well worth it.
↓ more ↓The disc is a real gem, lovingly produced by Brooks and Perrino and features a Capital Region all-star roster of musicians including guitarists Joe Mele and the late Bill Hesch. Featuring eleven original tunes by Brooks and an excellent cover of the Paul Carrack-Jim Capaldi-penned Love Will Keep Us Alive, the disc is not strictly blues (like his first C.D.) by any means. In fact, one of the best tracks Doin’ Things I Should is a bouncy, hook-filled dance-pop tune with Jackson evoking the best of Diana Ross or Dionne Warwick. I’m Thankful Everyday takes off in a contemporary gospel direction, even featuring some hip-hop edge thanks to rapper Simon Grimes.”
Don Wilcock, founder and president of Northeast Blues Society, staff writer of The Record, Troy, N.Y. and author of Buddy Guy’s biography, Damn Right I’ve Got the Blues wrote: “sometimes the sheer will and spirit of a performer can transcend his or her humble circumstances. Sometimes greatness can come from unexpected places. Goin’ With The Flow is an album so powerful, it, at times, reduces me to tears! It so connects with adult working class life that it will make believers out of people who think popular music is only the province of the young. The album is a glistening production featuring saxes, background vocals and state-of-the-art production that is co-producer Tony Perrino’s finest hour. Centerpiece of the C.D. is a haunting rock-soul ballad, Love Will Keep Us Alive. Milayne’s wrenching vocal on this one number alone speaks volumes in the face of unspoken emotions that can only be imagined. She says it was included at the specific request of an anonymous backer whose health is fragile enough for Brooks and Jackson to have finally put their perfectionist obsessions to rest and release the album. The title cut is a reference to Milayne’s mother, who frequently tells her to Go With the Flow. It and ten other Brooks originals are homages to the everyday struggles we all face simply surviving and loving one another in the workaday world. While making no apologies for stress and angst, it is an upbeat collection of songs that may cause some people who use the duo as background for their happy hours to pay closer attention to their music.”
