Sweet and creamy vocals drip over the sides of a deep dark vintage groove, layered with warm horns and strings and topped with decadent guitars
Editorial review
With Twilight Blueberry took listeners piggyback on what certainly qualifies as the sexiest bicycle ride around downtown New York City ever, but Have Another Pillow is something else entirely. Specifically, the album is a mystery wrapped inside an enigma spun out into a dark but sparkling neomedieval fairy tale. Call it concept funk but with the creamy aphrodisiac center still pumped like sweet filling through its 14 mouth-watering tunes. Or, to put it another way, if Twilight was the playful, early-evening come-on, Have Another Pillow is the full, adults-only bedtime story, complete with motley cast of characters, costumes, props, a plot, and climax -- more than a few of the latter, in fact -- as well as plenty of dancing sugarplums in between. The tale roughly runs according to the following outline: Blueberry is magically transported to La La Land, where, guided by the light of the Phoenix, she begins her ascension to Queen, happens upon the Fool and the Demigod of the Tune, and ultimately finds her way to the Chosen Land, where the spirit can soar free from earthly obstacles. As is almost inevitable with such ambitious song cycles, the narrative -- parts of which are fleshed out via the videos included on an accompanying DVD disc and through an illustrated storybook available from the Blueberry website -- occasionally breaks down at certain points along the journey. The music, on the other hand, never does. The songs correspond in a sense to theatrical scenes, but each stands quite nicely on its own, irregardless of story line. And, unsurprisingly, together they form a collection of awesome, irresistibly cocksure, glitter-lit grooves, from the heavy-lidded coo "Miss Understood," with a trumpet-led break so deep it draws water, and steamier funk workouts like "Idol Hands" and "Flaming Tendrils" to the smoldering boho soul of "Honey Bee," "Tears," and "Elevate Her" and a couple compellingly unorthodox turns in the shadowy, orchestrated, and free-form "Off With My Head" and "Brother Love" and the ghostly baby-grand pieces "White Flag Lullaby" and "Return." Have Another Pillow, a pure enchantment, is the perfect way to melt away an afternoon. Or to dream away the night. ~ Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide

"SOUL NOUVEAU" Written by Zach Shaw
Musicians are people too, and as such, they must take into consideration the palette of sound they choose to color their songs with. Often times, especially in pop music, there is a tendency to stay within the lines and paint by number. By its very nature, popular music may not be the best genre for musical experimentation, but that doesn't mean the envelope is pushed to the limit. On the contrary, in order for pop music to grow as a valid form of expression, it requires artists with versatility and depth. Like a popular painting, a great pop song requires an original, independent vision that is instantly recognizable by the audience.

Blueberry has exactly that-a fresh musical perspective that is pushing pop into new territory with a revamped attitude where anything goes and everything works. This locally based project is fronted by the multi-talented Gwen Snyder who hails from the fashionably ahead-of-their-time pop/rock project Johnny Society. With Blueberry, Snyder has carved a musical identity all her own and a musical niche that music fans are starting to notice. With a golden voice and brilliant instrumentation, Snyder is making a large impact on a growing movement in pop music.
New Soul is what they call it-a message delivered deeply deeply from the heart over an intricate pattern of groove. Sometimes this stylistic tendency can come off as revitalized vintage material, by the production and melodic approach are way too contemporary to dismiss as reheated funk. The aim of these projects is obviously not to resucitate classis elements of pop but to reconstruct and juxtapose them to create "Soul Nouveau".
In the past, the contemporary soul torch has been passed on to artists such as the Cardigans, who share a lot in common with Blueberry's sugary coating and lush instrumentation. But no comparison ultimately makes much sense alongside the dynamic range of sounds that
Blueberry skillfully brings into the mix. Even the most energetic songs are deviously subtle in their harmonic approach. There is an amazing feeling of authenticity and craftsmanship, especially in the down-tempo moments where Snyder's voice goes heavenward with soulful aplomb.
Hightlights abound from Blueberry's upcoming LP, "Have Another Pillow." There's a priceless progressive lounge-pop hook on "Elevate Her" which gets capped off by a jazzy four-part harmony with a graceful vocal bend at the end. The song then slides into a deeper groove as guitar and flute solos kick off simultaneously as a brilliant outro. "Honey Bee" is three minutes of sexy soft funk featuring intricate instrumentation over a simple beat from an analog drum machine. Unpredictable rhythms and a triumphant brass section brush up against a power-disco beat in the driving "Dragon Hill". Another welcome departure from format is "White Flag Lullaby", a beautiful but haunting piano ballad. Expect all this and more when Blueberry takes the stage at the Joyous Lake this Friday night and check out Blueberry's official website at www.blueberrylounge.com.
