Time Thief EP by Bitchy Boy

Bitchy Boy successfully launched their debut EP, Time Thief in September 2003 at Manchester Lane (Melbourne city) with an 8-piece band, playing to a full house with queues outside.

In Jan 2004, Bitchy Boy staged 'Planet Bitchy' at The Corner Hotel (once more with the 8-piece lineup) to bitchin' feedback from the street press and punters alike.

In 2004 several tracks from the Time Thief EP were played repeatedly on new extreme sports TV show, 'Cactus Garden' on Network 10, a national broadcaster.

With the Time Thief EP out now through The Elements Music, Bitchy Boy are gearing up for a big year with plans to pursue airplay, festival gigs, regional tours and high profile supports.

BITCHY BOY

Friday 30 January, Corner Hotel

Planet Bitchy was the theme for Bitchy Boy's big night at the Corner Hotel and fans weren't disappointed by a show that turned into an absolute intergalactic funkathon.

Michelle Parsons opened with a blues driven guitar and a big engaging voice and was immediately followed by local hard boys Flathead.

It was an interesting mix of musical genres, if not altogether complimentary to Bitchy Boy's brand of funky whiteboy soul.

After a break between Flathead and Bitchy Boy, Mark Hughes (lead vocals/guitarist) and Ashley Smith (bass) performed two songs as a duo, including an excellent version of Robert Johnson's Crossroads.

Just when the momentum was building, they confused me by leaving the stage!

Some time later they returned with an opening curtain flourish and with the full brass section and fellow bandmates Jenni James(backing vocals) Jeff Shepherd(keyboards) and drummer Paul Richards.

Fortunately, the momentum that had been building since Flathead's seriously rocking set recovered when they opened with the freshly penned (written just for this show, I'm told) rave up Planet Bitchy.

Augmented by the excellent Eugene Ball's trumpet work, Jordan Murray's trombone and Ian Whitehurst on sax, the band tipped its collective lid to the fine funk of Sly & The Family Stone.

From there they rocked into tunes from their Time Thief EP including the excellent Describe The Sun and the latin influenced vibe of Surrender, which featured knockout keyboard work from Shepherd and sparked some frenzied dancing in the crowd.

The mighty bass work of Ashley Smith made Clark Gable a crowd pleaser while Into You was a libido driven musical bonanza, with Hughes at his most charismatic and the horns at their sexiest.

The set closed with the epic Black Day, which worked as a showcase vehicle for Hughes' considerable vocal talents and some terrific guitar work.

All up, it was, well...bitchin!
