Legendary 80's HM band with blistering lead guitar work by the Toomey Brothers.
Editorial review
Like many secondary New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands, Bitches Sin achieved precious little notoriety with the albums and singles released during their nondescript existence, only to witness quite unbelievable interest from later-day metal collectors, whose curiosity stretched even as far as checking out their unofficial catalog. 2004's Majestic Rock release, The First Temptation, is the plastic, silvery proof, delving deep into the band's past to unearth their legendary first demo from August, 1980, originally titled "Twelve Pounds and No Kinks," as well as a smattering of sessions from the BBC's Friday Rock Show. Needless to say, sound quality is not one of this package's strong suits (or even concerns), but it also might have been a lot worse, and of course we're talking about a genre where raw authenticity is actually revered as a prime attribute. What's more, only one of these seven demos (the slow churning epic "Ice Angels") would later resurface on Bitches Sin's official releases, making surprisingly accomplished offerings like "Down the Road," "Two of a Kind" (part Iron Maiden, part Praying Mantis), and the boogie-inflected "Heavy Life" that much more compelling. By the same token, poorly executed efforts like "White Lady" (marred by somewhat hysterical vocals) and the band's clumsy eponymous song are similarly easier to forgive, since they are, in fact, merely demos. "Down the Road" is reprised for the band's BBC session, which took place one year later, in August of 1981, and featured an almost entirely new Bitches Sin lineup. It also introduced significantly advanced material like "Fallen Star" (a mixture of Thin Lizzy and AOR), "Hold on to Love" (a fast-paced metal romp) and the group's most famous composition, the still awesome "Strangers on the Shore." And so, one is surprised to find that, as a whole, The First Temptation is quite a bit more interesting than initially expected, and highly collectible for NWOBHM fanatics, to boot. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Just one of the many interviews surrounding the BITCHES SIN legend.........www.bitchessin.com
You and your brother Pete have founded the band 1980. A little later the cassette "Twelve Pounds And No Kinks" comes out. Tell to us a little bit about it. Which statement is behind the title "Twelve Pounds And No Kinks"? And which musicians were present at that time?
"We had been together for about 4 months and had a lot of ideas for songs. It was important to find out what we sounded like and to see if there was any future for the band so it was important to go to the studio and record those early ideas like ‘Down The Road’ and ‘Ice Angels’. The title ‘Twelve Pounds And No Kinks’ came from an advert for a call girl that we saw in a telephone booth in Soho, London. The band members at the time were Ian and Pete on guitars, Alan ‘Cocky’ Cockburn vocals, Perry Hodder bass, Billy Knowles drums."
In 1981 the legendary Metal sampler "Heavy Metal Heroes Vol .
↓ more ↓I" on "Heavy Metal"-Records comes out. BITCHES SIN were represented there with the song "Strangers On The Shore". Which remembrance do you have to this time?
"We had originally recorded ‘Strangers On The Shore’ at Neat Records Impulse Studios. David Wood didn’t think the track fitted with the Neat label so Heavy Metal Records said they wanted to use it for their compilation. Originally there was only going to be one guitar solo in the middle of the song but on the day at the studio I played a guitar solo at the start and finish just to warm up and the guys said “you must keep that in!” so that’s why ‘Strangers On The Shore’ has 3 guitar solo’s!!!"
In the same year the Single "Always Ready" on "Neat"-Records also appeared. On these Single the girl "Sharalee" appeared for the first time. What can you tell to us about "Sharalee"?
"Sharalee was a 17 year old model who was putting together her portfolio and Ian MacDonald of ‘The Studio’ was a friend and fan of the band. He asked Sharalee if she would like to do the session and she was very keen to be on the sleeve…….she too was a fan of the band. You can see more images of Sharalee if you use the ‘artnational’ link on the Bitches Sin website www.bitchessin.com"
Which important was “Sharalee” for you?
"With our name and heavy metal music we wanted an image that supported this and Sharalee was able to do this for us with her photos. At 17 years old Sharalee was naturally talented in front of the camera."
