Bio / Background
In the fourth grade, Bill Grady was forced to take piano lessons from an elderly lady in his neighborhood who had bad breath. While teaching him the basics of how to read notes off the page, she loudly chewed on a variety of smelly sandwiches, and when each lesson was mastered to her satisfaction she would retire the exercise with an adhesive gold star. Bill practiced these pieces just enough to jump through each hoop presented to him, and quickly grew bored. He pleaded with his parents to allow him to quit. It was decided he would be excused from taking lessons provided he played the instrument for 30 minutes a day. Around this time, a distant relative gifted him Billy Joel’s “LIVE In Russia,” and Grady immediately learned the opening ‘Prelude’ by ear. As the album was on cassette, and the batteries in the player brand new, the tape played fast, the pitch was raised, and he wound up learning the song in the wrong key.

He lived in a trailer park next to the mall, and he was the fattest man I have ever seen,” Grady recalls. “He had a concert grand in his living room, which pretty much took up the whole place. When I asked him how he got it through the door, he nonchalantly replied that they ripped off the roof and lowered it in with a crane.”
Having owned a guitar for years, Bill never played it until college. While attending Boston University’s SFA studying Theatre, Grady lied to a casting director claiming he could play guitar in an effort to get a role. It worked, and having only two weeks to convince the world he had an understanding of the instrument, he applied his pianists knowledge to the strings and quite literally cut his fingers.
Bill Grady is a Singer/Songwriter living in New York City and his debut album, “A Room Called Home” is a collection of his tunes both solo and with a band.
