Musical storytelling from the heart of the Peace Jungle.
Bio / Background
My musical storytelling recipe consists of three ingredients: an ancestral responsibility, a soulful feeling and a sweet dream. The responsibility requires me to honor those who have gone before -- to pass on what has been given, along with what I learn myself, to those who come after: slowly but steadily, growing and improving, from generation to generation. The feeling arises in the music that I write or cover, and it shapes my performances. Listeners often compliment my “arrangements,” even though I don’t do arrangements. Billie Holliday didn’t do arrangements, either. “If you find a tune and it has something to do with you… you just feel it,” she wrote in Lady Sings the Blues. “And when you sing it, other people can feel something too.” I dream of a Peace Jungle Network, where music and stories bridge the “gaps” between younger and elder generations, and help young people to recognize and live their dreams.
↓ more ↓Lady Day had a similar dream 50 years ago (I’m sure she wasn’t the only one), which unsurprisingly brings it all back around to the responsibility.
I think of what I do as musical storytelling in the tradition of African Griots and Jalis, as well as European troubadours, largely because that is how listeners have described it. My constantly growing repertoire includes more than 100 musical stories, about half of which are original. The other half covers everybody from the Beatles to the Great American Songbook. My first “gig” was a children’s storytime at a bookstore in the San Francisco Bay Area in February of 2000. In the summer of that same year, I traveled to Washington D.C., to play during an interfaith peace vigil, and also traveled to Los Angeles, CA, to participate in a Children’s Storytelling for Peace program. Around that time, I co-hosted a singer-songwriter open mic at the Freight and Salvage Coffee House in Berkeley, CA. I currently co-host a poetry and music open mic at the Berkeley Art Center. Regular exposure to very talented poets, storytellers and musicians keeps me constantly discovering and working to transcend my own limitations.
When asked to choose a genre for my music, I generally say folk, but I’m not sure what that means. Music is a soulful feeling that comes from the heart. Voices, guitars and other instruments are just vehicles for sharing it. When someone says they like the music, what they are really saying is that we’ve made a heart connection; which tells me that I am fulfilling the responsibility and realizing the dream. That’s all I need to know.
Abiding peace, abundant blessings, one love.
