Bio / Background
"a friend turned me on to post-punk music in 2002, and it made a huge impact on me artistically. The bands play this darker music, and the lyrics are very real and descriptive of the trials of life......of REALITY. I loved punk, but what most attracted me to the bands rising out of England in the early 80's was the minor darkness of their music. It still has a close relation to punk rock..........stripped down and urban, street like and honest...." (Bettie Black)
Although Bettie Black's music is often described under the umbrella headings of “indie” and “alternative", she rises above the modern titles. Her musical influences ~ and use of the color black ~ have strong roots in the past. She shares common attitudes with songwriters as disparate as Joy Division, Johnny Cash, PJ Harvey and Johnny Rotten.
Her musical path began in California; after moving to San Francisco in the 80's, Bettie began jamming with a lot of musicians from the vast wealth of local bands.
↓ more ↓“They liked my ideas and began encouraging me to write my own songs.” After a particularly transformative experience at an Iggy Pop show, Bettie realized her destiny. “Iggy had the wild self expression I always wanted for myself. I knew right then that music was the only thing for me.”
After graduating SFSU with a theater degree, she fronted several acclaimed bands in the SF club scene such as Glow and Runaway Bunny. This led to her first record. Since then, she has continued to write innovative material, drawing from her daily experiences. “I feel like I have a channel within me that constantly sends me riffs and scraps of melodies.”
With churning guitars and driving bass and drums, Bettie's music provides a large and relentless backdrop to the undeniable and universal heartache of healing the human condition. The darkness of the music is punctuated by the ultimate confidence and strength of her words. There is no mistaking her voice. It's a clear and present, unbridled understanding of the struggle of the human spirit.
