Her music feels like a jelly donut & a sonata..Betsy writes sparkly pop songs with quirky lyrics, that have weight..
Bio / Background
The music by Betsy Spivak: “It feels like a jelly donut and a sonata, which sounds like it would be discordant, and contradictory, or confused in itself, but it isn't. It’s a genre that is its own. It smacks of jazz and pop, and is surely bluesy, but its none of these would wail out in protest if it were tagged any of the above.
Whatever it is, it’s familiar without blending. It feels nice, but it has a mind of its own, but still gives us room to have it to ourselves, to do with it what we like. It’s weird because its got quirky lyrics that have weight, and sound that is toe tapping but at the same time quietly surprising, and clean, but curly at the edges.
Betsy’s music can’t be talked about in couplets or describe it quickly because its diverse. The sound is consistent, but its open, so there is lots of room for it to shape itself into all sorts of things while still coming from the same seed. So yeah, its diverse, but it cuts a clear path.
↓ more ↓It’s fun the first minute, then sweet, then pretty, then pretty heavy. It’s anything but boring, and always pulls the ear closer to try and unravel the words, inside the dainty but still earthy melodies and when you walk away from it, it stays with you, hangs around your head and toes and just sort of swirling and giggling, then resting. Ready for you to reach out for it again for another taste.”
