Bio / Background
spinout recording artist bernie larsen, amd heis reggae projects cry on cue has been on the national reggae scene since the mid 1980's. larsen is not only the singer and guitarist of the popular reggae band, but has also written the majority of the songs and worked out the arrangements. he began playing reggae in the early 1980's with slide-king david lindley's el rayo-x band, and jackson browne's "lives in the balance".
after five years recording and touring internationally, he left to pursue his own musical vision. cry on cue was originally comprised of session men and former members of king crimson and the small faces as well as musicians from bob dylan's and tracy chapman's bands. "i had gotten addicted to the world beat music, so we had a heavy reggae-type influence." the original formation of cry on cue has performed throughout the u.s. and canada, headlining and opening for reggae greats the wailers, jimmy cliff, burning spear and mutaburuka.
↓ more ↓at the most difficult time, between writing, arranging, booking and managing cry on cue in los angeles, larsen got a call from melissa etheridge, who was riding high with her newest album. two weeks later he was on the road as guitarist and keyboardist with etheridge. what started out as a three-month tour turned into three years. but once again, larsen realized that playing someone else's music was not going to satisfy his soul.
he left the band in 1992 to return to making his own music. while he built up production credits, his musical goals were still left unfulfilled. he realized again that it was time to get back down to basics and do what his lifetime goal was. this included leaving the financial restraints of living in los angeles and moving to the upper peninsula in michigan. "up north i have the freedom to do what i want to do," larsen said. "to me, spirituality is nature. and in los angeles, you couldn't find peace and serenity if you had to rent it."
after nine years and over 125 production credits,12 nationwide tours and immense regional success, larsen decided it was time to return to his hometown of los angeles with his newfound inner calm. he is currently writing and recording solo work, as well as producing albums for legendary blues singer/guitarist becky barksdale, musician + old soul erik koskinen, folk-pop musician michael kadenacy, trinidanian steel pan player emile borde, and actor/blues great jake la botz.
he took touring stint as lead guitarist for americana artist lucinda williams, and played on 4 tracks for the forthcoming "public enemy" album.
he has also been producing/writing/performing for rickie lee jones new solo album "the sermon on expostition blvd.", as well as the score for the film "friends with money".,
he has just finished a new reggae record for his latest cry on cue project with reggae genius, producer karl pitterson, who recorded and mixed bob marley's "exodus" as well as "kaya", in addition to many of the genres greatest records.
there are plans for a national tour in the works following the release of the record later this year.
so much music to explore, and so little time.
