One of the hottest new bands in the UK bring you their unique Bubblegum Soul sound. "I love this band, funky with lots of delicious hooks - wonderful" Mathew Priest, Dodgy.
Bio / Background
“The lead vocal is magic. This group has got soul!” - Dave Godin, Legendary Blues & Soul journalist
The BDI’s began their musical career in Southport in the mid-nineties as The Panda Gang attracting almost immediate attention from such luminaries as Jimmy Miller (legendary producer of The Rolling Stones and Traffic) who expressed an interest in working with the band after hearing their early demos. Unfortunately Miller died before any collaboration could take place.
Fuelled by Miller’s belief, together with growing record company interest, the band abandoned the Northwest for London where they launched themselves on the capital’s live circuit, also honing their three part harmonies by busking throughout the West End.
For A Rainy Day (1998)
The band’s career finally took off in 1998 when they released their debut album ‘For A Rainy Day’ in Japan to ecstatic reviews.
↓ more ↓Lead track ‘Morning, Evening’ was a hit on Tokyo radio and the band were flown over to perform live to a tumultuous reception.
Flipside / World Of Trouble (2000)
Back in the UK, the band marked the new millennium by releasing their British debut single ‘Flipside’ on the highly respected Shifty Disco label. The band joined fellow Shifty Disco artists on a short nationwide tour.
“A Wonderful voice.” - Record Collector
“Check out the low slung cool of ‘Flipside’, with it’s chunky bass and drums rhythm over which is poured a rich stew of honking harmonica, guitar, Motown Horns and close harmonies. A prime slice of jazz-tastic Northern Soul. Then there’s the smoky cinematics of B side ‘World of Trouble’, which sounds like a Portishead tune covered by a proper jazz band.” - Andrew Kaye, Doncaster Free Press
“A magical piece of funky soul.” - Mod Radio UK
“Sultry acoustic pop, awash with three part harmonies and 60’s soul.” - BBC Radio Oxford
'Flipside' was followed by a string of highly acclaimed singles on the band’s own label BDI Recordings:
These Arms EP (2000)
“This band effortlessly mix every vaguely funky influence imaginable; at any given point, the sparkling numbers can remind you of artists as diverse as Jimi Hendrix or Corduroy. This band are clearly aware the most important factor in the creation of epic music is the possession of an epic imagination.” - TJ Worthington, Paintbox magazine
“Blue-eyed jazz tinged Soul par excellence.” - Mark Sergeant, Scootering Magazine
Merciful / Someone Turned The Lights On (2002)
“Ridiculously good pop songs. Absloute class.” - Get Rhythm magazine
"A soulful slice of 60/70s flavoured blues fuelled brit pop. The b-side is a classic piece of almost Motownesque Northern Soul." - Organ magazine
Ease Up / If I Never (2002)
“Funky with lots of delicious hooks. Remind me of Stevie Winwood and Traffic at their best. Wonderful.” - Mathew Priest, Drummer with Dodgy, writing in Rhythm magazine
Where There’s A Will / Wholeheartedness (2004)
The band's fifth single was championed by DJ Ben Turner on BBC Radio West Midlands, who invited the band on to his show to play a live acoustic session.
“These two tracks are the sweetest things you will hear all year. As near to perfection as you’re ever going to be.” - Mark Barton, Losing Today magazine
“I love this band. The singer has got an amazing voice, a real natural with an almost gospel feel.” - Mathew Priest, Drummer with Dodgy, writing in Rhythm magazine
Music Made My World Go Round / Simple-minded (2005)
“Genuinely something different.” - Camden New Journal
“A funky Latin Soul beat driven by the magical voice of Brent Thorley.” - Mod Radio UK
