Bio / Background
Heartland rock band Basement What? has been busy writing and recording in the, um, basement for the past year and have emerged with their third independent release. With a street date of December 6, Keep Off the Grass is an album that stays true the formula of Basement What?’s signature guitar-driven college rock vibe, but also has a depth to the songs and arrangements that is sure to help them build on the national attention they have been garnering for the past few years.
Straight ahead and sometimes quirky, but always within the boundaries of their own jangly and melodic alt/rock vibe, Basement What? (Dave George on vocals and guitar, Pete Jacobs on bass, Nick Young on guitar and Lou Grant on drums) has been winning over fans and critics since releasing U Listen to What? in 1998, followed by a self-titled LP in 2001.
↓ more ↓Their music contains elements of Barenaked Ladies, Widespread Panic and Dave Matthews Band, while at times leaning toward the edgy pop of bands like 3 Doors Down and Lifehouse. Perhaps it’s easier to say that their sound is firmly entrenched in quintessential Middle America.
While Basement What? is a staple on the Indiana college bar circuit and have headlined the homecoming events for both Ball State University and IPFW, they have been developing a grass roots fan base and hope to branch out beyond their current five-state touring region. They were chosen to showcase at the Thirsty Melon Music Festival, the Midwest Music Summit and the Midpoint Music Festival'"all in 2005. In 2004, Basement What? won first place at the Midwest Music Conference Battle of the Bands.
The band’s signature song, “My Beer,” was a college rock anthem, having landed on compilation CDs put out by Billboard Magazine and Oasis CD Duplication. Basement What? has appeared in Rolling Stone and Billboard, and their song, “Illusions,” climbed as high as #4 on the Alternative charts at Garageband.com. They have shared the stage with national acts such as Collective Soul, Saliva, Blue Oyster Cult, Watershed, The Why Store, Frickin’ A, SR-71, Shinedown and Seven Mary Three.
