Bio / Background
Guitarist David Barrett has played with Canadian bands Platinum Blonde, Vertigo and no.9, and has recorded for artists such as Mark Holmes, Amanda Marshall and Esthero. He has also composed music for film soundtracks, and produced spoken word and solo guitar cds. "The Atomsmasher's Noisy Trade" is his first in a series of experimental guitar cds that feature the guitar in an orchestral and ambient context.
The idea of improvised music created with tape loops has been around for a long time. Earlier pioneers used reel to reel tape machines, with sound on sound, to create soundscapes of lengthy, meditative pieces that would both be created by the performer and by the gear itself. In most cases the loops would begin to generate a musical direction that would be unknown to the composer.
