A cross between Motown and a funk jam-band with two bassists.
Editorial review
Centered around bassists Matthew Henninger and Cameron McLaughlin, Balancing Act put together an organic mix of funk, neo-soul and groove jazz on their self-titled debut album. An unusual concept in theory, the two-bass style of this six piece ensemble works superbly in practice and allows Henninger and McLaughlin to layer various melodies and rhythms on top of eachother in sophisticated and increasingly funky ways. This is pop music informed by such legendary bassists Jaco Pastorious and Bootsy Collins. In that sense, songs such as the mid-temp jam "Rubber B-Man" as well as the pastoral "On Winding Roads" find Henninger and McLaughlin weaving their supple, rounded bass figures into patchwork quilts of sound. And its not just the four string voices that impress here. On the contrary, with vocals from drummer Jonathan Ovalle, organist Joshua Shilling as well as contributions from singers Madeline Davis and Angel Bond, Balancing Act brings to mind the polished acid jazz approach Brand New Heavies mixed with the classic work of '70s soul icon Bill Withers. ~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
The history of Balancing Act is a story of great people finding their way together in the effort to make great music - great music that had only itself to define. Matt Henninger and Cameron McLaughlin, both bassists, were introduced two years ago and decided that although they were both striving to become the best musicians they could be, they envisioned a use of the bass that differed from traditional applications. Why couldn't two musicians play together even if they did play same instrument? It was this question that started the journey of creating a project that featured the bass as not only the fundamental of great music, but also as a writing tool as well as a textural voice. Over the course of the next 18 months while exploring what two basses could accomplish while performing together, Matt and Cameron met the musicians that now make up Balancing Act. These musicians are without a doubt the best people either had had the privilege of meeting.
↓ more ↓Although the circumstances by with each introduced themselves differed, one constant remained - the desire to create great music the right way, by capturing the essence of what makes music transport the listener to whatever destination they desire. Music should grow with you. It is our hope that the emotions that fueled the writing of these tunes translate, in whatever way it was destined to, to all who listen to it. This album is the very beginning of what Balancing Act will become. We hope that you will honor us by joining us on this journey.
