Bio / Background
Dystopia is the debut studio album of Animalia, the solo project from Kyle Rayner. From Hamilton Ontario, Rayner plans to make his mark on the southern Ontario indie scene. “I’ve put a lot into writing these songs. I used to be a recluse. I would just sit in my room or basement and write. I’ve sacrificed a lot and I feel like I owe it to myself to promote this album properly.”
Recorded in Hamilton Ontario, Dystopia has been a long awaited album. “This is by no means a solo project. Nilton was amazing,” says Rayner of album producer Nilton Medeiros. “He played many of the instruments, wrote lead guitar riffs and gave me countless ideas for the songs. He meant so much to the album.”
Animalia is not only a play on words through the literal sense, it is also a thematic lifestyle for Rayner. Dystopia strives to enlighten others on the state of the modern day world, as well as the state of mind of mainstream society.
↓ more ↓Believing that the best way to change the world is to make people more aware of habitual responses, the album incorporates enigmatic thought patterns in a non-sequential way to make its point.
Animalia is melodically driven and fighting to stay out of the mainstream. “You see so many bands’ press photos and they’re all standing around showing off they’re tattoo’s and looking like their ready to kill someone. That’s so overdone. It really disgusts me,” says Rayner. Battling the concept of seeing the world as it is or painting a more palatable picture, he struggled with the literal meaning of some of the songs. “To be honest, some of these songs we’re tough to put out,” admits Rayner. “I really hate always being taken in a literal sense. Some of the songs relate to personal experiences of things I’ve done or seen and others are just random thoughts that have no direct implication of anything I’ve been through. Having said that, I’d really like to know how other people interpret them. That’s more important to me.”
The writing process has always been a therapeutic outlet for Kyle to help overcome personal issues. “I’ve tried to make peace with some of my inner demons. It’s strange though because I truly believe everything I’ve been though has made me a more creative person. I think that comes through in the album”. However, Rayner states the drain of the recording process really took its toll on him. “If it wasn’t for my wife I would have never gotten through it. She is the most admirable and beautiful person in the world.”
Kyle now hopes that the album generates enough interest and support to receive some radio play. “Having the album receive radio play would be a great vindication for me,” Rayner says. Despite the release, Rayner says his focus remains unchanged. “I plan to continue writing. I always have songs going on in my head. It helps give meaning to the formula of my identity.”
