This album pulls together elements of blues, swing, and folk music, elegantly tied together by Alyson's great vocal range that can be as powerful as it can be sweet and sultry.
Bio / Background
Alyson Jay grew up outside of Youngstown, Ohio where her folks still reside. She played music for years, mostly the tuba, and loved to sing, although her instrument of choice didn't lend itself to a singing career. After a summer at the Ohio Light Opera Company, she ditched her tuba for a guitar and started singing. This was also the summer she met Tamsen Fynn, a singer-songwriter from the Bay Area. And so, Alyson's journey began, on a porch with a rum and coke float, and a couple of girls with guitars.
That was eight years ago. Now, Aly is releasing her first album. And, as fate would have it, it has been released on Elephant Red Records, the label started by her long time comrade in the field, Tamsen Fynn.
Over the last few years, Alyson has bounced around, often having more guitars than suitcases, but has found a home in Flagstaff. Alyson plays gigs of all types.
↓ more ↓You can find her playing at various community events such as the Flagstaff Book Festival, and Movies on the Square. She also helped organize and played for the Poets Against the War reading. She also rocks it out for the weekend long Pride in the Pines Festival, Arizona's best gay pride party. Of course you can catch her at many of Flagstaff's local watering holes.
Besides staying busy with her music, Aly and her husband own and run Uptown Billiards, a fine drinking establishment in historic downtown Flag. The bar biz is hectic, but Aly enjoys the people who frequent their pub, "So much of the motivation for this album came from the folks who kept coming into Uptown and asking,'When are you going to record?'. They stayed on my butt for a year while it was getting done!"
So, if you come through Flagstaff, stop in and share a pint with Alyson Jay, she'll be happy to see you.
