Bio / Background
Alice Despard came into her own as a unique stylist with 'Push Me Pull You.' Finally comfortable with her style of music, bringing the tempo down to her own measure, and getting immersed in a more organic,
psychedelic sound, it welcomes back her Beatles and Byrds influences, rather than running from them. The album spans the course of nearly a decade of musical collaboration with some fine D.C. musicians and producers. Alice's stint with Vauxhall Wagon is summed up by the cover of the Mekons' "Learning to Live on Your Own," which features Evan Pollack as well as Eric and Alan Brace (Last Train Home).
Alice's stint with Whirligig (Tom Kane, Bobby Birdsong, Evan Pollack) is represented by "Astral Thread," "November Day," and "Hassled." Ian Jones (Viva Satellite) helped capture Whirligig's sound at his Evil Genius Studios, while Nikhil Ranade (Calibos) became Alice's engineer and producer for 'Push Me Pull You' and the ensuing two albums.
